Opinion Question

In your opinion. Who are the three best scrollers out there and why? I get a ton of information off of here and appreciate everyones input as well as  other web sites as well as videos and such, but  I'm looking to learn from the best of the best. I'm interested in all venues from fretwork to puzzles to portraits to pattern design. If three is too limiting feel free to add more names.

I Have to agree with Len, Dan, Ron....

I did name one person and should not have... not my place to choose,

pick anyone. Too much to consider...

That is an incredible question.... you could get a few hundred named...

I could give you thirty plus that impress me.  Most all who do fretwork are candidates.

Hey, how about the intarsia artists?

and Then, and then.... There's Me, Me, Me, Me, Me, Me...

Moi, Mua, Mhe, Mene, Meh, Meg, Mi, Yo...

Richard, in my opinion, this is a very silly question. Just because someone thinks one person is better than the other, doesn't mean that they are the best. Do you not realize that you can learn something from every scroller out there, no matter how long they've been scrolling. I'm sorry, but, this questions leaves me with the impression that your being a bit snooty.

Three best scrollers ... hum !!!, THERE ARE NO THREE BEST SCROLLERS, let alone THE BEST. I could'nt and wouldn't EVER name an individual scroller on this site or any other for that matter as being THE BEST. Everyone and I mean everyone has something to contribute in life to help Learn from one another. An individual may be good at what they do but that doesn't mean he or she is the best. Once a person thinks he or she is the best at what they do, that person has just stopped learning, and with a closed mind on their way to becoming a SNOOT.

whoa! each of us has different interests in scrolling ,no one of use is the best in all there is to offer in scrolling.for intarsia there are quite a few professionals here in the club which are scrollers too but excel more in there preferred taste of scrolling.Lots here are into puzzles etc .Maybe what you need is to go to a seminar where you have the chance to try different aspects of scrolling and see what you want to excel in.wish i could help more but to narrow your question down that would involve to many things to consider.

I have watched and stayed silent. This is almost impossible to answer. Too many greats designers, artists and such a wide variety of art. I would suggest looking, watching all of them and learn. Develop your own style and artisan eye. It's a lesson you learn everyday. All of us are there and all of us have a unique style or preference. Welcome to the wonderful world of art, scrolling and imagination.

I don't think there is any objective way to answer your question.  I think one learns best when they are open to as many learning avenues as possible.  That is what makes forums like this so great.  You get advice and opinions from a wide variety of perspectives.  When you couple that with resources like YouTube, you can learn in a few hours on the internet, what it took me months/years to learn on my own.

Keep an open mind and don't limit yourself.  There is much to be learned out there and it's to your benefit to take advantage of as much variety as you can.  ;)

I'm not providing a direct answer to your question, however I'd like to comment on the question itself.

Because we are talking about either art and craftsmanship finding objective measures or what is the BEST is pretty difficult. I think it's largely a matter of opinion. None the less there are some measures you might try to employ, if you are trying to follow in someones footsteps.

Published: One area might be if a scroll saw artist is so good and well known that a publisher foots the costs for a book.

Juried Exhibitions: Folks at the sharp end of the arts & crafts apply for entry into national art exhibits. There's one at the Smithsonian Institute in DC, the Cherry Creek Art Festival in Denver and so on. Regardless of the medium (fiber, wood, photographic paper, metal etc. entrants works are examined by professional (weavers, woodworkers, photographers, metal workers) and graded and only the best are included.

Seminars: Each year there are regional woodworking shows. Often there are seminars/presentations and those who are asked to do a presentation on scrolling or in-lay or pattern design or whatever are in the top group.

Originality: When I make a scroll saw project from Steve Good or Sheila Landry pattern I may be (or not) a fine craftsman (because I can run a saw) but I'm no artist. Art is original and I've never done anything with a scroll saw that could qualify as original.

Good luck with your search.

Sometimes the best artists are not the best teachers. To explain things well and encourage/inspire people to challenge themselves is a gift.

With many aspects of scrolling there is no best way to do something, so it is often good to get multiple points of view and try them.

One thing I will say is that this site is the best collection of scrollers, and the best place to learn new things about scrolling. The members here are awesome (except that one guy  ;) )
