LarryEA
I have items I've cut that I want to mount on an oval backer. Circles, squares...etc are easy.. How do I make and cut an oval 'pattern' to satisy the size I want? All it will be is a backer I mount a piece of scroll on. I can print one and size it,,, Just thought there would be a simple way... No strings please...
MrsN
For simple shapes I use the "auto shape" feature of Word. (the other word processing programs have similar features. It is pretty easy to size an oval to what I want and print it out. LarryEA, Scrolling Steve and Phantom Scroller
Dan
I just trace the outline of the scrolled work on the backer then cut inside the line about 1/8".
orangeman
Good advice from MrsN! I had the same dilemma some time ago and finally figured out in Word you can enter length and width and BINGO you have the most beautiful oval I have ever seen ! I tried "Paint" but it came out kinda fuzzy on larger ovals. bb LarryEA

jerry1939
At first, I made the inner cuts of the fret piece. Next I glued it to the backer. Cut the perimeter for a perfect match. Masking tape on the "front" (the fret piece), laid it face down and sprayed the back and lightly sprayed down at about 45 degrees for the edges. Would often have some paint seep into the end grain and show on the front. Not enough to be a big deal, but it bugged me. Now I do the entire fret piece and make the backer slightly bigger. Very simple & easy. Buy the tiniest washer in the store. Clamp the finished fret piece to the backer. Put the washer tight against the cut piece, insert a pencil in the washer and trace around. If the cut piece is symmetrical, mark the front of the backer, because you have slight flaws in the cut piece. Paint the backer and eyeball the edge as you position for gluing. jerry
Lucky2
Sorry Larry, I can't help you out on this one. What I did, was buy an oval design maker. But, if you've ever seen what some people call a do nothing machine, then you've seen an oval design maker. If you have time and a little bit of patience, you could always build one. There a very handy rig to have, and they're adjustable to just about any size. Len LarryEA

Dave Monk
I cut my backer large....most of the time just square...glue it on and use a round over router bit to trim it off. If you use 1/8" backer and a 1/4" round over bit you can't even hardly see it. I usually use the same round over bit on the front. dave

It is a piece of cake to make one. Let me know the size. Sam LarryEA

Sam777
Hi all, Here is an oval (Ellipses) pattern which can be used as a backer. I used Autocad to draw these. The largest ellipse in this pattern is 8" X 10.5". If anyone would like bigger sizes let me know.
