ricklab
First try at box with wooden hinges. I glued the hinges on with the top open. It does not close tight now. I am not sure if it is the hinge or the way I glued them in. Should I have attached with the lid closed?
Phantom Scroller
Give us a picture of the hinge please. I'm interested to see how you put them on. Roly

heppnerguy
Jim Finn, the "box man', makes hundreds of boxes every year and recently posted a tutorial on making them. Part of it has the directions for installing the hinges. Go check that out.. Dick heppnerguy WayneMahler and Jim Finn
Jim Finn
When installing surface mounted hinges (Metal) on my boxes I put a spacer between the lid and the box at the hinge. I use a double business cards as my spacers. I put one near each hinge. This gives enough gap, for me, so that the front of the lid makes good contact with the box front yet does not look too crooked, when viewed from one end. I have also done it this way when installing wooden hinges that I have made in the past. In the photo you may be able to see that the right end of the box lid is slightly higher than the left side is. The hinges are on the right in this photo. Lucky2
Yes Rick, I'm sorry to say, but your right, the lid should have been in the closed position. I install mine with the lid closed, and I use spacers the same as Jim does. To help us to give a good and proper answer, you should try to post pictures of what you're talking about. Birchbark
Drill the pins out. Clamp the lid in place. Drill slightly bigger holes, put new pins in. Russell oldhudson, NC Scroller, Jim Finn and 1 other

NC Scroller
We all make mistakes. So so woodworker leave them and hope to get by. Good woodworkers can fix their mistakes. Great woodworkers can fix their mistakes and learn from their mistakes. I think you qualify for the latter Jim Finn
Jim Finn
I worked in construction my whole life and we always said...."It is not a mistake unless you have to ask someone else to correct it" Not a mistake if you correct it yourself. We all live and learn...if we are paying attention, that is. I like those wooden hinges!
