laust18
When cutting a backer board, should I be cutting it the same size as my work piece, or just enough to cover the subject matter? and if your backer board is a different color than your cut piece, do you leave the outside edges different colors or do you do something to make them the same color? Denny Knappen
That is a question of what you like. I don't cut the perimeter, but glue the backer and then cut the perimeter of both at the same time. An example is the Roses plaque made several weeks ago. laust18
lawson56
I myself cut it the same size, and paint the whole thing, but that's me. laust18
LarryEA
I use either a miter saw or a scroll saw to trim my edges, whichever is easier. If I paint a backer, I paint only what I want shown. If I have a backer with a different tone, I leave all as it is. Be careful not to ruin by trying to stain or paint. laust18
Scrolling Steve
As Denny stated, it is what ever you want or like, I have done backers a number of ways depending on the project ! laust18

So you finish the piece first then cut the perimeter ?

Thats what I currently do, so I think i'll stay with that....thanks for your input
laust18
I myself cut it the same size, and paint the whole thing, but that's me. say I wanted to put a piece in a picture frame, would i just use say poster board for the backer so it woill fit into the frame? or will 2 1/4 in. pieces fit? Bill WIlson
I doubt 2 1/4" layers would fit in a standard frame. Might try 1/8" or you could use mat board.
Denny Knappen
Not sure how to reply to the question by laust18, but I cut the perimeter as the last cut, sand with a well used Mac Mop, then finish. LarryEA

crupiea
What i do is lay out my piece and spray glue it down. then i measure my borders and draw some lines for those. i then tape a backer board onto it with some painters tape around the edges. After this i can cut a frame and backer at the sme time. once it comes to assembly, of course it will be an exact fit as the pieces were all cut initially at the same time. take as much time cutting the backer and frame and use quality stock for this as it will really make or break the piece. imagine a rembrandt in a dollar store frame. Denny Knappen
For my framed projects, I use mat board because they are free (we own a frame shop). Poster board will work, but it is thinner. Check with a local custom frame shop. They may have small pieces of mat board free.

Lucky2
Loren, my backers are always the same size as the item I'm using them on. I finish the item, then I paint the backer and glue the two together. As for the edges, I don't do a thing with them because the frame will cover that part of the cutting.
