Travis
I think maple would make a pretty spoon. Especially if you go with a highly figured maple like tiger maple or bird's eye maple. I think Cherry would make an awesome spoon too.
Christina
Deb, I think any kind you want to use basically is okay. My mom made some out of mahogany once............really pretty. I think it just depends on what you want them to look like. Christina
blame
are you talking spoons that will be used in cooking or decorative ? if you go maple i would be very leery of it for food use. i'd stay away from anything that has spalted since thats a fungus that causes it in the wood spalting is cause when the moisture content in the air is high while drying if you go maple make sure you use Hard maple or rock maple , silver maple is soft and tends to spalt , common or soft maple also spalts really bad and is rather soft good choices would be white oak or butternut( which is also called white walnut) hickory would be a good choice too stay away from any exotic species or conifer species(i.e. spruce, pine, fir or ceders)
Travis
I wonder if porous woods like red oak would be a problem. Bacteria might get into the pours. But then again, I suppose if you finish it with an oil, it might not be an issue. Hrmmm...
