edward Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 Just wondering what speed you guys use on the mini bird houses, I been having trouble cutting them with Popular wood, which I glued together, and using FD ultra reverse blades, sorta tried others and still having problems. any suggestions would be helpful. edward amazingkevin 1 Quote
scrollerpete Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 (edited) I used FDUR #7 and full speed on the saw. Let the blade do the work, don't push to hard and you will be fine. Poplar is soft wood, should cut easy. Edited June 8, 2016 by scrollerpete Quote
Scrolling Steve Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 (edited) The last ones that I cut , I used a FDUR#5 blade at about 3/4 speed also in poplar. .... I have decided to try the FD polar blades that Denny recommended......I will see how they work for me. Edited June 8, 2016 by Scrolling Steve Quote
Bill WIlson Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 When using reverse tooth blades for compound cutting, the dust can tend to clog up in the kerf, generating heat and shortening blade life. Skip tooth blades generally work a little better as they clear the sawdust from the kerf more effectively than reverse tooth blades. Quote
dgman Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 I use FD Polar #5. They are a skip tooth and have a slight set to the teeth. If you don't have Polar blades, use skip tooth blades like Bill suggested. Quote
bandaideman Posted June 8, 2016 Report Posted June 8, 2016 I have used all the blades above over time and like the polar the best. The big thing is I keep saying to my self thickere wood slow down, no hurry take your time. That does not always keep me from trying to force the cut but helps. Take breaks to get back to slow patient feed. Quote
NC Scroller Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 I use #5 and #7 Polar blades on my compound birdhouses. I put clear packing tape on all four sides of the block and I have my saw running at full speed . One point I want to bring up. You are using glued up lumber. The glue could be your problem. Most glues are harder then the surrounding wood and thus will lead to added fiction and rapid dulling of the blades. The same problem happens with plywood. Quote

Lucky2 Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 Edward, any skiptooth blade should work fine, two-way cut blades work well for this type of cutting also. Try a few different types of blades, you'll soon settle on the one that works best for you. Len Quote
danny Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 I HAVE CUT DOZENS OF THESE MINI BIRD HOUSES. LAST BATCH WAS USING POPULAR.... USING THE 1.5 THICKNESS THEY CALL FOR DID GIVE ME PROBLEMS. I RIPPED THE BLANK DOWN TO 1.25" AND STILL ONLY USE THE ....FDUR #1 BLADE. CUTS PERFECTLY FOR ME AND I HAVE MORE CONTROL WITH CHANGING DIRECTIONS DURING THE CUTTING PROCESS. JUST MY 3 CENTS....................Danny :+} OH YEA.... HAVE TO REDUCE THE PATTERN DOWN A TAD.... Quote
Denny Knappen Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 On the houses, I use FD Polar #7 at full speed on an EX21. For the birds, I use FD Polar #3. Quote
edward Posted June 9, 2016 Author Report Posted June 9, 2016 Seems like when I glued the wood together, that might be the problem, guess I will try and rip a 2x4 down and see if it works better. edwardf danny 1 Quote
