vykus
I have a piece I'm finishing up out of honey locust wood. I'm trying to find something to use as a backer with a 1/4 inch sticking out around the border. There are significant gaps so the backer would be visible. I need a wood that is going to harmonise with the yellow/orange of the honey locust. Any ideas?

dgman
Without seeing the project, I would think a dark or medium dark wood like Walnut or Mahogany would look good.
vykus
Here are some pictures of the nearly finished piece. I doing some more sanding and a little shaping of the letters. The second picture shows a piece of scrap with lemon oil on it to give a little bit of an idea of what it will look like finished. The idea of mahogany sounds promising. Bill WIlson
Walnut would probably be my first choice, but I like walnut a lot, so it would be my first choice for a lot of things. Cherry would look good as well, but it would take some time for it to darken enough to provide the necessary contrast.
vykus
Walnut would be good, I have a ton of 1 inch walnut but I don't want it that thick so I would have to go out and get some.
Dan
If there is a wood shop nearby take your walnut and see if they will resaw it and run it through the planer. It may cost a couple of bucks but it beats buying more wood.
Denny Knappen
I agree with walnut and the darker the better.

Lucky2
Matt, a piece of baltic birch plywood would look good as a backer, for this piece. I look forward to seeing what you ended up with, it shoud look amazing. Len
