Vott1
I got an order for a set of 5 tagua slice pendants. Shipped em out today. This hobby is great fun, but its even better when it pays for itself Scrolling Steve, Phantom Scroller, Birchbark and 2 others
Lucky2
Very nice Kip, what's it like to cut tagua nuts? How fragile are the slices, and what type of blade do you use to cut them with? Len Vott1
Vott1
Very nice Kip, what's it like to cut tagua nuts? How fragile are the slices, and what type of blade do you use to cut them with? Len Thanks, they actually cut nice as there is no grain to deal with. They are not fragile at all, I keep the slices between 4.5 - 5.5 mm and cut with flying Dutchman 2/0 polar blades Edited July 15, 2016 by Vott1
amazingkevin
I'm guessing these are small as nut usually are except for coconuts. No grain would be ideal for some serious cutting like these.Maybe you can eat your mistakes if that happens, lol Very nice job of it ,Pretty high detail i'd pass on! wombatie
Very nice indeed. What do you finish them with? And is there any chance of the outside of the nut falling off the inside? Marg Vott1

From what I've read before they're dried the inside of the nut is jelly-like and is edible. Once dried it's like ivory though
Vott1
Very nice indeed. What do you finish them with? And is there any chance of the outside of the nut falling off the inside? Marg Thanks Marg. The white ivory is sanded to 400 grit and I clear coat the bark w lacquer while the pattern paper is still on. The bark would come off in little flakes eventually
Vott1
I like them. I have a couple of those nuts around my messy shop some place.....Give em a try on the saw, they are small but the ivory does cut very well
Vott1
Those look good. really different. Where did you get the idea to try and cut something like that.By accident really, I was looking for a place to buy some Corrian to try on the saw and ran across tagua slices in my search,so I ordered a handful to experiment with. I've been having fun with them ever since

Scrappile
Kip, from my pen turning days when I wanted "ivory" I purchased what is called "Alternative Ivory" You can get it in different size blocks and in rounds. The down side is you don't have the nice dark bark look that the nut has, but something you might want to check out. Vott1

The down side of tagua is you never get a bigger piece.
heppnerguy
I have never seen or even heard of these nuts. Sure makes for some interesting cuttings though. Very nice pieces Dick heppnerguy Vott1
