Wanted to introduce myself after "browsing" around for a bit. My name is Melanie. I live in the Knoxville, TN area. I am a newbie here on the forum and to the scroll saw although I bought my scroll saw a number of years ago (Dewalt 788 Type 1) when my children were young. Not much time then and I put it away. They are now in college and I have more time to learn and play (and more patience as well). I am just now getting back to learning it. At the present, I am primarily interested in Intarsia work and recently took a beginner class with Judy Gale Roberts. I was fortunate to meet several nice scrollers there including at least one fellow forum member from here, Scott, aka NC Scroller. I have a lot to learn and I appreciate all that everyone shares here, on other forums, blogs, etc. while many seem to indicate Intarsia is intimidating to them, all that "intricate" small detail work done by many with fretwork, inside cuts requiring all the holes to be drilled, etc. is what I find more intimidating. LOL

 

I have done a few small intarsia pieces and will try to share soon. They are beginner pieces for sure but I hope to learn and grow my skill with time and patience. (patience is the hard part for me I am afraid.) I had cut several pieces out to practice my line cutting as I was having to wait on my husband to help me get my flexible drum sander and such setup for proper use to "finish" them. We finally got it setup so I can start doing all my sanding. He is a hobby wood worker himself (primarily furniture type work but his latest venture is into "turning"). That means I am now "sharing" his workshop and some of his tools. He "seems" okay with it! LOL

Melanie,Glad having you join us here.Do your self a favor and keep coming back.So much info is giving freely and each and every question will be answered.Oil painting and intarsia both take a long time but that time spent is well worth it.Lucky you to have a well equipped shop with a help mate.NC Scroller is going to be a big help for you,He's a very knowledgeable and will be very very helpfull for you.We have many intarsist here so any questions you have will be answered.Show us your saw dust pile as soon as you can,lol Welcome to the village friend!

  Welcome Melanie, there is a world of resources here and many talented crafts people. Remember, once you peel the pattern off the wood no one knows the you drifted off the line.

Welcome to the forum.  So glad you joined us, and I am very anxious to see your work.  The thing that intimidates me most about intarsia is gathering all the different species of wood needed.  It is expensive....

      glad to have you aboard. I too started with intarsia but never had the opportunity to get some first hand instructions like you have. Lucky you. It is all a learning experience for me. I have to agree that intarsia really is a lot easier to do then fret scrolling but for some reason a lot of people seem to be intimidated by it. I have to say, loggin on here often is a must, as that is how we all get to know each other. If you do that you will discover that everyone if very friendly and it will only take a short time  before you are comfortable with us.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I look forward to learning more from everyone here and sharing where and when I can. We just returned home from an Alaskan Cruise with our kiddos. It was lovely, had a great time but was ready to get home and back to my scrollsaw and sander. LOL I will as soon as the piles of laundry are done. I will also try to get some pics of what I have been working on up soon as well.

 

Denny, I will have to try and get down and visit your shop at some point. I will probably have to wait until my kiddos return to college maybe. I have a son who will be starting his 2nd year out of state at UGA (hard on me since I am a die hard TN Vol fan LOL). Then I have a daughter who will be starting her 3rd year at a somewhat local DIII liberal arts college where she also plays on their volleyball team. He will leave to go back first week in August and she will move in and start VB the 3rd week.

 

I look forward to getting to know everyone and learning from all of you.

Hi Melanie, Welcome to the Village. I have never attended one of Judy's classes but have been to her studio many times. We (wife and I) try to get to Knoxville a couple times a year(have friends there) and I always try to make it to Judy's to buy a pattern. I enjoy fretwork but I like intarsia more.

Thanks for the welcome Clayton.  Let me know next time you all head down south and are going to Judy's studio and perhaps I can meet you in person one of those times.  I was excited to learn that I was so close to one of the great Intarsia talents - definitely makes it easier to take her classes - lot less expense since I can drive over every day and sleep in my own bed.  I am signed up for the intermediate class in October and am looking forward to that. Need to get some more work done in the interim on my own.  That was one reason I signed up for that class a well, to "encourage" myself to keep going and working on projects.
