Iguanadon
Hi All, It's Iggy again with another odd question for folks to ponder and put in their 2 cents. So... attached is my business card (which my wonderful wife designed for me) and I had it turned into a 2' x 3' banner which I hang from a table at the front of my booth. I want to have another banner made, a bit larger to hang from the back of the tent so that it's behind me. I plan on having a picture of the scroll saw with one of the puzzles sitting on it and then wording that says: ANIMAL PUZZLES INDIVIDUALLY HAND CUT USING A SCROLL SAW Is this appropriate wording? I keep getting hung up on using "hand cut" but actually using a power tool. Maybe just remove the 3rd line entirely? Or just go with HAND CUT ANIMAL PUZZLES The entire intent of this sign is that I get asked all the time what computerized cutting machine am I using. I'm open to any and all suggestions, so throw out your ideas. Hand Cut? Hand Crafted? etc, etc... Thanks as always, Iggy amazingkevin and heppnerguy
WayneMahler
First I like your sign. I have been asked countless times what computer system I use to cut my stuff. It is then explained it all hand cut on a scroll saw. I have a sign for the back of my popup, 2ft x 4ft with just the name and a picture of one of the story crosses I do with a link to the fb page. Personally I prefer the hand cut over the hand crafted. With the saw on the sign it should be self explanatory. My thoughts only. I hand craft furniture but hand cut things on my scroll saw. I hope this makes sense. But it is all about the wording and the way people can understand it. danny

jerry1939
You are on the right track. Here's my 1 cent worth. On your second posting, does the photo look "busy"/confusing? Would it look better if you took an internet picture of your brand of saw for sale, to show more of a side view of the saw? jerry Dave Monk

I actually looked at some of the stock photos of the DW788 and thought about doing that. I did swap out the photo with a slightly different one and here is the current version... http://content.screencast.com/users/Iguanadon/folders/Jing/media/454a76af-4f8b-449d-a4e5-2770b621ff87/2016-07-18_1638.png And here it is with your suggestion... http://content.screencast.com/users/Iguanadon/folders/Jing/media/d6192648-668d-44cd-a5b8-ea83ad49f14a/2016-07-18_1719.png Place your votes! WigWag Workshop
My 2 pennies, I really like the design. Only thing I would recommend, is to invest in a domain for an email address, instead of using Gmail. Only reason I mention it, I was researching the same thing, and that was something that was always mentioned, not to use a web email account. like, scott at woodcraftbyscott dot com. Iguanadon
I think I have a winner here. Without setting up a full studio photo shoot, I think the blue tarp backdrop helps with the "clutter/busy" look. http://content.screencast.com/users/Iguanadon/folders/Jing/media/6763c86c-a028-4e0d-8844-76e71f467102/2016-07-18_2007.png Doug

I keep expanding the animals I find and cut and am enjoying them so much I'll probably stay focused on them for a while. The banner only costs $48 so I won't be out much if I expand my hobby. Lucky2
Personally, I don't like the look of the blue tarp. Plus, I think your missing out on one important bit of info. These puzzles are made on a scroll saw, that should be info that is included on the sign. Yes, I know you have a picture of a scroll saw, but, that's not the same thing as saying it. What about a sign that goes something like this; Handcrafted by Scott, Scroll Sawed Animal puzzles, and your contact info on the last line. I know it doesn't mention handmade or handsawn, but, the Handcrafted by Scott pretty much already lets one know that. Len

Iggy asked for opinions, just because he got 2-3 of them doesn't mean that he's got them all. If you think a subject is going on longer than it should, then all you have to do is stop reading that posting. Len

The nice thing is that with Vistaprint and their various coupon codes, the signs are relatively inexpensive to have made so if I get negative feedback or questions about the sign, I can look to improve the next version. Keep the ideas coming.
NC Scroller
Get rid of the blue tarp. Use a white sheet instead as your background. Though you are doing this doesn't expect the comments / questions about computers and lasers to stop.
Travis
What are you using to design the sign? If you're using a graphics program like GIMP or Photoshop, you can just cut out your saw and overlay it onto your wood grain background. That way you don't have to worry about the background of the shop. Just get some good lighting. If you post the picture, I can mask it out and give you a transparent PNG that should overlay onto your picture.

Travis, I greatly appreciate your offer to help me with the picture and I'll keep you in mind with my next banner design/order. We'll see how this one turns out. I'll share a picture once it arrives and I hang it in my tent the first time. Travis
Iguanadon
New banner arrived today... Will share picture of it hanging in my tent at tomorrow's farmers market. FYI - when ordering from Vistaprint, don't ever pay extra for faster shipping... they always ship things out quickly. I ordered this Monday and chose the slowest shipping method and received it today (Friday).
orangeman
Or you could keep it real simple and just use the word Puzzles. I find that my sign attracts folks from afar. Iguanadon
UPDATE - Today was my best day at the Farmers Market (only my 5th time out there), sold 35 pieces today, well over my average of 19. The banner looked great and it was very convenient to point to it to show what a scroll saw is and then show them one of the actual blades which I always have with me. http://content.screencast.com/users/Iguanadon/folders/Jing/media/251556ac-e2bd-49ae-9469-14d00e8734b9/2016-07-23_1358.png http://content.screencast.com/users/Iguanadon/folders/Jing/media/16d3109b-b2e2-4400-8004-2dcc4e8d90c8/2016-07-23_1357.png On a side note, I had a major OH SHIT! moment... using my PayPal credit card swiper, I was processing a sale for $50.00 but as I was typing in the amount, my finger hit a 9 after I keyed in the amount... it processed as $500.09. I FREAKED OUT... and it wouldn't let me stop the transaction even though it hadn't been signed yet. Fortunately for me, the lady was far less worried about it than I was. I gave her my name, address and phone number and I got her name and phone number and told her I'd issue a refund for the overage as soon as I got home. I was able to do it very easily from my computer on the PayPal site and I texted her to let her know and she was very nice about the entire thing. trackman
You are lucky that you are in a high traffic area for your farmers market! My small town one we will have maybe 30 people come thru with around 15 vendors. Some Saturdays I will make $100 other days (today) $10.
