First of Many

Back when I was doing a lot of lathe work, one of my favorite things was to make mini birdhouses.  I have a few left of the ones I made, many were given away.  Today I finished my first mini-house on the scroll saw.  It was tougher than I expected it to be, first attempt at compound cutting and first time cutting that thick of wood on the scroll saw.  Anyway I made it through one.  Next one I think I will drill a 3/8" hole for the bird to go into, The 1/2" just looks a little big to me.  Also I will try to get more contrast between the house and the bird.  The bird needs to show up more.  I had one bad spot in the roof where I must have been off in my cutting, but I'll work on doing better next time.

Here is my collection of birdhouses and a close up of the scroll saw cut one.

Nice work Paul! I'm glad you've taken the plung into scroll saw mini birdhouses! I agree with the hole size. I have been drilling then at 3/8" for a couple of years now. I usually use bright colored woods for the birds like Yellowheart, Redheart and purpleheart.

Like you, I have turned mini birdhouses too. I still have a small display set up. Maybe I'll get a picture and post them.

Great looking birdhouses.  They are super and fun to make.  I got the bug about a month ago and now have about 40 of them.  Seriously, you just want to keep making them.  I am finding all kinds of wood that I can work with and it is a ball.

Glad to see you working on them.  Enjoy and thanks for showing us your work.
