I just bought a new Dwalt 788 today and I guess it will be a few days before I get it. I have been doing wood working for a long time but never used a scroll saw so I need help. "BAD" I don't know about blades. I do know I need to buy a foot pedal. Where would be the best place to learn what I need to know on this forum?

Welcome, so glad you signed on.  I can say I learned most of what I know right here on this forum.  The answer to all questions in on this forum but if you can't find it or don't have time to look, ask the question and you will get answers.  Just remember there are many ways to do things, so work out which answer works best for you.

For example, there are a lot of blades, sizes, brands, types.  Flying Dutchman and Olson blades are the most popular I would guess.  The size and type depends on what you plan to cut.  There are charts available online that show blade size, versa thickness of wood you are going to cut.  Good article here about blades in general:  www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/20398-newcomer/ But through it all there is the ones you like best, others may not.  You have to practice and experiment to determine which you like best.

Remember it is suppose to be fun, and it is.  relax, and enjoy.  You are starting off with a great saw.

Hey Hawkeye10 and welcome to the Forum from yet another Tennessean. Like you, I am also a newbie to the saw and the forum. I have an older Dewalt 788 (bought it years ago, didn't have time to learn it then) Right now, my primary interest is intarsia work with the saw. We have been "back home" in East TN for 19 years now (gee, time flies) but we spent 10 years in Nashville and I worked in Mirfressboro during part of that time so I know the area. Glad you found the forum, great place to learn from others sharing same hobby.

Welcome Hawkeye!

You came to a good place to ask questions and learn about scrolling.  I wish places like this had existed, or I knew about them, years ago when I started scrolling.  Trial & error is a great teacher, but a lot of relatively simple tips & tricks would have been nice to know early on.

Anyway , for beginners, I like to recommend John Nelson's book'  "Scroll Saw Workbook".  It's a great resource you can keep at your fingertips.  You don't have to follow everything to the letter, but at the very least, it helps you understand the basic concepts.  You can always come here and ask specific questions, but sometimes it's easier to have at least a basic frame of reference to start with.  Nelson's book provides that and more.

Good luck and have fun making sawdust.

You are so screwed! You have no idea how addictive this hobby is. Do you have a local club?

Oh yea WELCOME, I am also a relative newbie to this site, just remember there is no dumb ? we have all been there at some point.

You will need to post pictures.

One other suggestion sign and date your pieces and keep your first ones. It is fun to look back and see how you progressed.
