I bought a 40-694 last year. Well pleased with it.

Schematic looks identical to the 788.  https://www.1800toolrepair.com/tool-repair-parts/dewalt/scroll-saw/dw788/dw788type2

Pick whatever color matches your shirt, but be sure to compare prices.

I would really consider the purple one - the others not so much.

Well GrampaJim - I hope I did the right thing.  I really wanted PURPLE!  ;) I saw them "in person" at Judy Gale Roberts Studio when I took her class. PURPLE is my favorite color.  I have a DeWalt 788 Type 1 already soooooo - I didn't NEED one. I'm just a beginner so one saw should be plenty.  But it was PURPLE and an Excalbur and did I mention it was an original Canadian one and it was PURPLE.   :oops: Anyway - I really hope everyone agrees it was a good buy because it should be headed to my house from Texas very soon.  Now how to hide a PURPLE scroll saw from my husband?  ;)  (He won't care I bought it - he thought I was already going to buy an Excalibur before I even took my first class because several people he knew told him once I took the class, I would want one since that was what I would use in JGR's class. He'll just want to know WHERE I plan to put it.  That's a good question.  :shock: )

Hello my Scrolling Family....  I really, really want to Thank

Everyone for their input.  Still leaning towards the Delta, but decided

its no hurry at this time.  Still warm weather and my Hegner is always

there.  Did I say.  Hegner is the Cadillac of Scroll Saws?

Danny, they may be the Cadillac of saws, but I wouldn't want one. I'm very happy to own an EX21, I would rate it as one of the top saws out there. What I don't like about the Hegners, is the blade holders that you have to attach to the bottom of the blade. To me, they're an extra step that shouldn't be needed. Plus, I would be always looking for them, as I'm always losing things.

Hi Dan....NOW THIS DOES PUT A CRIMP INTO THINGS.
Didn't know and Never did with TOP FEEDING.

Seems would be having to bend down to see how to clamp the blade every hole.

DOESN'T SOUND GOOD TO ME....SO....BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.

LEN....YOU ONLY ATTACH THE BLADE TO THE BOTTOM HOLDER ONCE.  THEN IT STAYS SNUGLY IN ITS HOLDER.

           BOTTOM FEEDING AND ATTACHING THE BLADE ON THE TOP IS ....SO FAST....  PIECE OF CAKE.

BUT GUESS ITS JUST A PERSONAL PREFERENCE OF LIKES AND DISLIKES.

NOW IF THIS DELTA I HAVE MY EYE ON ONLY FEEDS FROM THE TOP.    THIS MIGHT BE A PROBLEM.

NEED MORE PROS N CONS ABOUT THIS SUBJECT.           YES?               Thanks to ALL....  Danny  :+}

Danny,

I HATED top feeding the first couple of time I tried it.  I forced myself to keep trying and now it is second nature and SO much faster.  The trick is you attach the bottom clamp by feel.  I will never buy a saw that doesn't top feed.   Just my preference.

Danny, you don't have to top feed on these saws. In fact, bottom feeding is easier because the top arm lifts up out of the way making it easier. But I do recommend top feeding though. Like was mentioned, I would never buy a saw that didn't have a lifting top arm!

I just traded for the Hawk BM-26, & its a top or bottom feeder. The top arm doesn't move much more than their 220 VS. After 23 years of bottom feeding, I'm having issues with the top feeding business, too. I'm sure it'll take practice, & ALOT of getting used to, but, I can't see any time saved, or benefit of it at this point, by top feeding. Is there somethin' else I'm missing here?

And thanks again Dan for this info.  Great to Remember.

Gonna put buying another saw on hold for now.  May just bring my Cadilac from outside workshop to Garage work shop for

the colder months.             Time will tell...............:+}

Danny I have to somewhat agree on the Hegner.   They are a very reliable well built scroll saw but have a few short comings.   As for Delta that's another story.   I had a Delta 40-680 or sometimes referred to as the P20.   It was also a very nice saw.   You might like to know Delta has failed to support some their products in the past apparently when some bean counter decides to do so.   With Delta you may end up with a boat anchor if they decide to withdraw support.  I can't speak to other brands of scroll saws except Hegner which have been supporting and providing parts for their saws for a very long time.

For Delta parts, I would experiment with Dewalt parts.  i.e.  Order a bolt and/or a sleeve.  The schematics looks like they both came off of the same assembly line.  Both use metric bolts.  EXs use mostly standard thread.

For Delta & Dewalt, you buy the bolts & nuts at the hardware store.  Should be the same for the EX.  On the EX, the online sites want to sell you only whole assemblies for an arm and a leg.  Have not dealt with Seyco to see if you can get small parts from them.
