Birchbark's pattern

This is a pattern from Birchbark.

It is just stacked together at the moment. Not sanded, stained, or no finish.

Cut from 3/4" yellow pine at about 18.5 degrees. It stands almost exactly 8" tall.

The first concentric ring pattern I have cut and I didn't know if the top ring should be

cut at the angle since it wasn't the same shape as the other rings  or cut at 90 degrees so,

I cut it at 90 degrees to allow for the lip.

Wow gotta say it is different!!  lol.  Tall...  haha.  You did a fantastic job on it.  Looks so nicely done.  I've never seen it made out of that thick of material.  I guess if you wanted it not quite so tall you could leave a few of those bottom layers off. 

I think it will look very nice when its done.  Not an easy project by any means, you did a fantastic job on this.  Thank you for taking the time to post a picture for us, much appreciated.

Great job on this. I think you couldn't go wrong either way you cut the top. I guess you could cut a top at 18.5 * and see which you think looks the best. Please post more pictures when you have finished it.

That is truly an interesting design. It makes me wonder how stable it is, though. Glasses and vases are designed so that the circumfrence of the base is longer than the height of the container,, giving it the necessary stability, keeping it from being knocked over too easily. I often ask people if the glass has more distance around it or if the glass is taller that the the distance around the base. They usually answer; it is taller then the base's measurement around it. Just curious about this one. Usually it will be deceiving to the eye.

Nicely done, what is it? A vase, a dish, definitely not a bowl, but it is very cool. How thick are the sidewalls, they can't be very thick with it being that tall?

This is the first concentric patterns I have tried and really wanted to do one.

 

Dick, The circumference was really deceiving. The base is approximately 10".

 

Len, the wall thickness is 1/4".

As Birchbark pointed out, it would be easy to change the heighth by using

thinner stock or eliminating some of the rings or both. I think by using the same

pattern with the variations mentioned, you could make a bowl, a vase and a

taller fruit basket.
