bandaideman
I have a dewalt and recently I was cleaning the shop and dusting things off etc and noted the fuse cap was missing so have ordered one and will pick up soon. the saw was running just fine. The cap is all that is missing the fuse remains intact so most likely why it is running. Now when scrolling this week end it will suddenly stop running. If I wait a few minutes will start and cut well again but then stops after a few minutes. I have cleaned the switch. the motor feels warm not hot. Could the brushes be worn. I tried to look but after taking the screws out they did not pop out like the did on my old dewalt did. I will pick up the fuse cap this week and will take saw with me because I am not sure why the fuse did not come out with the cap cover. I will ask questions and see what they say about the cap popping off and the fuse staying put. the not running I suspect is the switch. To get the fuse cap It is 11.49 I think to get it from the company the shipping is over $10 additionally. The store here charges the same for the part and no shipping ordering it in as part of the store inventory. amazingkevin

bandaideman
I did blow them both out and still would stop then go again. I am hoping the cap will help with no dust. I was thinking the switch when blew it out it was on and started up briefly but then stopped.
NC Scroller
Sorry to say but it really sounds like a motor issue. Sounds like the motor is over heating and once that happens it cuts off until it cools down. Signs of a switch issue is it not turning on or off and not just stopping mid cut. bandaideman
I did think of the motor because it was warm bu I do not usually go about touching the motor when scrolling so not sure if it is warmer.
CharleyL
It can get warm, but not hot enough to hurt if you put your hand on it for an extended period. After an hour or so of cutting, mine definitely gets warm, but it is quite a bit below the temperature that can burn a bare hand. I've never checked the actual temperature, but I have an IR temperature gauge, so I'll try to get the motor temperature for you the next time I cut. This will probably be tomorrow. You should check your motor brushes. There should still be spring tension of the spring between the cap and the actual brush, and the brushes should be more than 3/8" long. When you put them back in, be sure to orient the curved end the way that it was when you pulled it out. If the brushes wear to the point that the spring touches the armature of the motor, the motor will be destroyed. Buy new brushes when they reach about 3/8 in length or at least check them very often when they start to get near this length. bandaideman
thanks Charley that is helpful. the motor is not by any means hot it is warm but non threatening. The brushes i thought but when I remove the cap the do not come out and i did not want to mess them up by trying to get them out. I will be at dewalt next week to pick up the fuse cap and plan to take it with me to have them show me how to get the fuse out that remains in without the cap and I do not know anyway to get that out. Then I can ask about the brushes also. I have a type one and never had trouble geting all those things out to check and keep an eye on them
