I know we all talk about the backing and whether we are painting or using other types of colors, BUT my question is...What is the best way to secure it to the cutting? Is glue the best? Brad nails? What? Thanks Also if glue is used what is the best type to use?

As I said a newbie question. Thanks again.

Hi Dave! As far as backings go, it depends on what I'm making. On my portrait style cuttings I back them with regular posterboard (usually black) and then I secure it to my cutting using double sided scrapbooking tape. These go into a frame with glass. Same method for any other paper backing. If I don't frame a cutting I use 1/8 inch plywood and paint or stain it. Then I will use Titebond II glue making sure I clean up any glue that oozes out quickly. Same method for cloth.

Hi Dave. I use 1/8" hardboard on all my cuttings that need backers. I use wood glue(elmers or tightbond) mainly one that dries clear. I have a roller bottle that applies a thin layer to the back of the cutting. then just press together and let glue dry. If its getting a frame I then place them in the frame, and use a few small brads to hold into frame. I make my own frame and normally don't put glass in them unless requested by customer. Hope this helps a little.

Hi Dave,

For framed fretwork, I usually use either fabric, felt or foamies. Most any glue will work just place some dots of glue in larger areas and apply the backing. For unframed fretwork, I use 1/4" ply and either paint or stain. Wood glue works fine but works better to lay flat and apply some weight till the glue sets. In either case, use the glue sparingly as it doesn't take much and that way no cleanup.

I use black felt for my backing. When I frame it, I just add the felt loose. That way, I can replace the felt easily (it will fade over time). The backer board from the frame hods it in place pretty well. If I have to attach it, I'll use hot glue. This is nice because its easy to remove if I ever decide to remove it in the future.

I also use felt (like Travis) but I use a spray on glue. I cut the felt to size, spray the back of my cutting and apply the felt. It works well and maintains a nice smooth back (no lumps from glue build up)

i use a 1/8" ply backer and attach with titebonds moulding and trim glue. it dries clear, has a fast set time and does not run. it has been the best glue for attaching my backers. it also works great to fill a void if needed. i use clear finishes and it is almost invisible to finish over. steve

Howdy good question! For me i like to use craft paper thats stiff.Depending on the application i'll use epoxie glues if i'm in a hurry and the project is small. For the clock i posted today i used the craft paper and elmers.Every spot on the back of the clock has one continueous line of glue.It was like a nitendo game squeezeing it on and not falling off the pattern, lol.Felts i use spray tempory bond extra wet,on the project only ,let it dry and press on.I have several types of glues and personal preferance usually decides, they all work.Scrolling is a blast watching it all come together!Hope this help. Show us your projects! :) Thanks for the question as i learn from them too.
