Popular Post rdatelle Posted September 12, 2016 Popular Post Report Posted September 12, 2016 Well I took a lot of your advice and changed the backer to red. The old backer came off pretty easy without and damage so I painted the black one red and put it back on. I think it looks a little better. Thanks for all your comments and advice. hawkeye10, fastfreddy, BigD and 8 others 11 Quote
Scrolling Steve Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 Looking good Ralph !....Both backers worked ! Quote
Kepy Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 Looks good. I have found that brighter colors really make the cutting pop. Quote
jerry1939 Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 I ALWAYS use "red metal primer" for a backer color on this type of project. 1. Paint a backer board. 2. Do the interior cuts of the piece. 3. Put wood glue on a piece of wax paper. Smoothen/spread it out with an old credit card. Set the piece on the glue. Pick it up, rotate it and drop it down a 2nd time. Clamp it onto the backer, let it dry overnight and cut the perimeter. This way, the glue is spread evenly and there is no "squeeze Out." Works well for me. jerry amazingkevin 1 Quote
heppnerguy Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 Red is perfect for this piece for sure. Looks great. I would have been afraid to even attempt taking off a backer board already in place on this. My wood working knowledge is so limited. You did a great job with your piece. It should be well liked and probably displayed in a place of prominence Dick heppnerguy Quote
Ron Johnson Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 Black is effective but red I think is a little more so. Again, awesome Ralph. Well done. Quote
penquin Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 Well done, the red really makes this cutting stand out. jim penquin Quote
rdatelle Posted September 12, 2016 Author Report Posted September 12, 2016 Thanks guys, Jerry, I never thought of spreading the glue out that way. I always put a few drops around and spread it with my finger. I'll have to give that a try. Quote
meflick Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 Thanks for showing your updated piece. I missed where some suggested a red back. Makes sense since its a "fireman's" piece. I liked it before - really like how the red pops in the background now. Like Dick - I would have been afraid to try and take off the backer for free of breaking all that beautiful work you had done. Glad it worked out for you. Thanks Jerry for your tips on spreading the glue out. I tend to be like Ralph and use my fingers as my spreading tool. Then I wonder how I got glue where I didn't want it. GPscroller Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 Thanks for the updated pic, thought the red backer would make it pop! Jeff Quote
RangerJay Posted September 12, 2016 Report Posted September 12, 2016 The red makes it - great looking project. Jay Quote

Put a little glue on the outer 4 corners of the plain backer. Saw the exterior and the 2 pieces will fall out of the glued area. Paint the backer & glue on the fret piece. Glue acts as a lubricant. When you clamp it, also use bar clamps to hold the 2 pieces horizontally and vertically. Otherwise, when the glue sets up, the edges won't align. You don't need to know how I know this !!!!!!!!!!!!!! jerry Quote
Lucky2 Posted September 13, 2016 Report Posted September 13, 2016 Ralph, it looks amazingly nice, the red backer really sets it off. Seeing as how the cross is made of Oak, you were very lucky to get the two pieces separated without breaking one. Len Quote

rdatelle Posted September 14, 2016 Author Report Posted September 14, 2016 Len, I started with a razor blade and was able to open up the top corner And then I used a flat putty knife and once I got that in I was able to work it down and it just kept popping apart. I thought I would break some of it but I got lucky. Came right off and then I rescanned the back. Quote
