Kevx
I found some really nice patterns to be cut from vinyl records. I can get nice records at thrift shops and flea markets for about $1 each. I tried experimenting with one and it will cut without too much melting on the slowest speed on my Hawk. A spiral blade cut better but I hate the rough edges. Regular small blades cut cleaner but melt a bit more and tended to catch and crack the album. I'm thinking about stacking a few and seeing if I have better luck that way. And what about applying patterns? Will mineral spirits melt the vinyl? Have any of you tried cutting albums and what did you do to make it work? Cutting an album. Lol. I'm back to my musician days!
Fab4
Hi Kevin: If you Google "cutting vinyl on a scrollsaw" You will get the info you need I would have attached something to this message but there is a ton of advice out there You are right about the speed - I think it's a matter of what blade works best for you Applying the pattern would work the same on vinyl as it does on wood, I think Tape, glue pattern and tape again As for the mineral spirits, I'm not sure - I'll let someone else chime in on that one Would like to see what you come up with when you do get some cut Fab4
Kevx
Thanks, Fab4. The information from a google search is pretty much what I expected. Definitely some different opinions too. I'll just have to see what works best for me. It produced quite a few great patterns for cutting in vinyl too. munzieb, Fab4, amazingkevin and 3 others
ike
I have done some cutting of vinyl I put painters tape on the record then the pattern I run at a 4 or 5 on my dw788 the tape helps with the melting back together using a #3 blade.. I just haven't found any thing I wanted to cut yet. WayneMahler
bandaideman
I have not cut vinyl before but with Plexiglas I found a suggestion to put Duck Tape on first then the pattern and the melting was less and the speed was still slow but could go a little faster. Not sure if that would help.
Fab4
Hi Kev: Another thought Sandwich the record between 1/8" or 1/4" thick material This should give you 3 cut outs if it works I never tried this but it kinda makes sense to me Fab4 WayneMahler

Hi Dan: I never cut vinyl either...........yet..........but I would think that the duck tape would be a chore to peel off after the fragile cuts on the vinyl...my 2 cents worth Worth a shot, though, who knows Fab4
Kevx
Thanks for the suggestions. I was wondering about what blade to use, so thanks ike. I tried a 2 but that may have been a bit small. I might try combining things and both stack and tape.Just saw your new replies, Fab4. I was just thinking about how I could get sacrificial material for stacking without costing more than the records themselves. I may have to start keeping a claw hammer in my car to pull the backs off of the entertainment centers I see people putting out on the curb for the garbage collectors all the time Edited October 3, 2016 by Kevx
crupiea
Have not tried a record. The melting would be the issue for sure. i tried to cut some glass the other day but got nowhere in a hurry. just used a range of regular blades but did nothing. Lucky2
Kevx, I have never cut an album myself, but I have seen a few that were cut by other people. Over on the Scrollers Cafe right now, there's one on display. It was cut by Gayle Mortenson, she's cut a few of them and they all looked amazing. I'm sure that if you visit the Cafe, you will get the info on how she cuts them out. Len heppnerguy

Lucky2
John, it's never been gone anywhere. There was a glitch with the old Cafe, but it was only down for a couple of days. Then Gayle found a better spot to park us at, ever since things have been working great over there. Try thescrollerscafe.discussion.community. that's what shows up in the header when I visit the site. Good luck, let me know if there's any issues gaining access. Lucky2
No John, your old sign in info would be no good, the site has been moved to a new service provider. Doing so, made it so that everyone had to rejoin, but, Gayle had sent out a notice to all members to let them know what was going on. Were you a member there, did you not receive the notice that went out? This all happened around the first of January. Len
