Dust collection for Intarsia

For general scrolling, I have been using the "box fan with furnace filter" setup for ever and am just fine with that.  For doing Intarsia sanding and shaping that is not going to cut it.  I know that the really fine dust is the worst to breath, and most dust collectors are really for chips and large particals unless a very fine filter is installed.  What do the experts here use and recommend?

Jim I also have a 20" box fan that I set up this week but I put a small fan blowing across the table toward the box fan. I run the small fan on low speed and the box fan on high. This set up is really working well.

I was fortunate enough to have a DH who is a hobby woodworker with a workshop that already had my scroll saw in it.  He has a dust collection system with piping to/from each piece of equipment including the scroll saws. We added to it when we set up my sanding station with the flexible drum sanders. Then he has one of those air filtration systems up on the ceiling (that I seem to forget to turn on most of the time.  )  Like Scott, I also always wear a good dust mask made for fine dust.  If you can setup a good dust collection system at your sanding station that would be good.

I have a dust collector piped thru my shop and built a down draft table for some sanding. I also use a pneumatic drum and built an enclosure to pull the dust from it. On my scroll saw, I have a HEPA vac hooked up to above and below the table.

If you are using exotics for Intarsia, one should be very cautious with fine dust created by sanding or cutting. I do not like blowing dust around the shop with fans as you end up breathing it and having in on your clothes. Each person has to decide what makes the best health sense for them.

I use a good Dust collector with a 1 micron bag, and I mounted a Jet Air filtration system to the ceiling.  Since my shop is small, the filtration moves all the air in the shop several times per hour.  I go thru the furnace type filters on an almost weekly basis at times.  I also use a good respirator when sanding.  Even with all of this, I still pick up a lot of dust upon cleaning my shop each week.

Now i'm in a 25'x12' x16' tall warehouse an have three box fans on a sheet of 1/4" cut to fit the door way an two fans on the other side of the warehouse to keep the flow going good

I have a Jet Vortex with a 2 micron pleated filter and ran duct work to every tool location with a manual blast gate at each location. It is fairly quiet 70-80 db at 3ft.  86% of 1 micron particles; 98% of 2 micron particles.

I would have gone with a regular vortex unit but at the time they were all to tall for my space. Ends up I am very pleased with this unit. I have a remote control that I use to turn it on and off clipped to my belt.

I ran 4" PVC waste pipe, not glued as my shop layout is not yet optimized.

Sycamore67 - (Larry),

How about posting some photos of your above and below dust collection. I am very interested, and I'm sure that others would be as well..

Right now I'm just collecting the dust from below the table of my saws (DeWalt 788 and Delta Q3) by just positioning the end of my vacuum cleaner hose near the bottom of the saw blade and holding it in place with tie wraps. I'm mostly looking for a way to collect the dust from above the table. I've tried a few of my own ideas, but only had limited success with them.

I've been considering the purchase of the Scrollnado system. Has anyone else bought one of these?

I seems like too much money for just a few pieces of plastic hose, and the long run to the right side of the saw blade looks like it might sag over time or vibrate and loose the correct collection position easily. I've tried similar designs and had these problems with my own designs, which were very similar. I still might invest in one of these, in the hopes that it would be better than my own home made versions.
