Just wondering why such a variance in blade cost?

Vendor A $2.35    B $2.50    C $5.50 and all kinds of other cost. All the same quanity, brand (Olson) and size.

Would you spend more to support local encomony or go with the lower cost online.

Yes it's true, prices will vary, that's capitalism. I am all for buying local if it's feasible, but not at double or triple the cost.

I teach my students to start with Olson's because they are available locally at Woodcraft, but I also tell them about buying online at a substantial savings.

I would think quality of metal in manufacturing blades has a factor regarding price. Why does one manufacturers blade remain sharp longer than another? Are you buying from a retail outlet or online? Again price is going to vary. Myself, quality of blade matters first over price. If the blade, and this applies not only to scrollsaw blades, doesn't cut properly then cutting can be frustrating producing poor results. I purchase online being selection available here is limited and three times the price for what is available. I've only used Olson blades. Quality and service has always been excellent.

When I first started scrolling, I knew nothing of the various suppliers, accessible via the internet.  I bought all of my blades locally and at $5-$6 a dozen, believe me, I used them until they smoked.

Once I discovered on-line/mail order sources and their bulk pricing, I never bought another scroll saw blade locally.  Places like hardware stores and the big box home improvement stores aren't targeting the avid scroller market.  That is evidenced by the saws they offer, mostly low end saws for the occasional user.  Specialty brick & mortar stores, like Woodcraft & Rockler are marking all of their products up in an effort to make their profit on every item they sell, because they have such a high investment in overall inventory, they can't afford to give anything away.

Consider most vendors are not equal, and comparison shopping should be one of the first factors - that is are the blades you are buying/using from the same manufacturer, size, quantity, and price, including s & h? On the internet you can place an order and in most cases get the product within 7 to 10 business days - and sometimes even faster, right to your door. Weather conditions, driving distance, and store inventory should also be factors. Adding up each "side" of buying and your time and cost to get blades locally will show IMO the best "buy " for your needs. Be safe.
