First thing I noticed Dave was spelling of Robbins but I now understand why. I think your cutting is fine and I like the pattern very much. Well done. Myself I would just add a black backer. If paint is to your liking I would paint complete pattern feathering out the edges.

Dave I buy 6mm sheets of birchply from Jewsons 8 foot x 4 ft in old imperial size and they will order oak ply and other types. then cut them up. Roly

Great job done here. Especially for your 6th try.  As for the color, I don't care for it. Keep up the good work .

No problem with the cutting. The color you are using takes away from the piece. I like the color that Russell did on his sample. I would just use a colored background. Good for only your 6th try. Keep at it and you will get better. We were all in your shoes once.

Only finished my 3rd project here, but it looks great to me.  I'm going to be the odd man out....again.  lol  I like the paint "smudges". it gives it a hint of color without being overbearing.

The cutting looks great to me. Just a personal thing but I'm not a fan of paint. I would rather try to change the look with background colors.
