Jim McDonald
Trackman started an interesting question on another thread, so I am trying to design a couple of fun polls. These should be enlightening over the course of time. The purpose is not so much to start a discourse of who is right, just a way to judge attitudes. dgman
You don't have an option of just packing tape on top of pattern, no painters tape. Old Joe
Sparkey
I don't use painters tape. I use packaging tape. Then I stick the pattern to the packaging tape. I don't like to tape over the pattern because of the glare you get off the clear tape. Old Joe

125 CSL
Right now I print, glue, painters tape and cut. Trying to get down what this guy is doing in this video. So far not getting as good results as he shows. (the pattern transfer part, from around 5.30 to around 13:00)--If anyone else has done this, would like to hear how yours turned out. https://youtu.be/YbrOlc9-1Lk Edited November 2, 2016 by 125 CSL

LarryEA
Large patterns I use GLAD Press n Seal ... little things I spray glue direct to wood I have Blue Painters tape that I may use sometimes.
Dan
Although I normally don't use packing tape, if I'm cutting thick material or a thick stack (3/4" or more) I will use packing tape.
Gonzo
The vast majority of the time I use painters tape, glue, cut. Packing tape has too much glare. SCROLLSAW703

Iguanadon
I use shelf liner. Very inexpensive and sticks well. Spray adhesive on that and stick pattern. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002AS9NC6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Casey Jourdan and Poppinfresh

Phantom Scroller
Spray re-positional glue on pattern stick to wood and sellotape on top that's my preferred method. works great every time no messing. Roly
ike
I glue directly to wood. the problem with painters tape is when you do fretwork with lots of cuts , the tape is a pain to remove. IKE
Blaughn
I read a book on marquetry written by Ken Horner. He recommended a product known as application tape available through the Sign Warehouse in Texas. I use the Enduramask line they offer. It adheres well to the wood. I then print my pattern on label sheets and adhere them to the Enduramask. I have also used spray adhesive to adhere the pattern to the app tape. When done, the Enduramask peels cleanly from the wood. Edited November 3, 2016 by Blaughn

hawkeye10
I just quite using painters tape and so far I like it better. Using mineral spirits to get the pattern off works very well and doesn't raise the grain in the wood.
Casey Jourdan
I use the green frog tape now....adhesion not quite as strong as the blue. Oh good idea especially for pieces with the tiny breakable sections (that I keep breaking pulling the tape...)
Casey Jourdan
Depends on the project. Blue painters tape then glue for anything that may sit around and not get cut within a week or two (I'm terrible about starting this and not finishing til a month later). But if I know I'll get it cut in the next day or so sometimes I use that Scroll Saw Tape from Scroller Magazine. I really like it but it can be a little pricey and it will come on stuck if it just sits around too long (couple weeks or more).
Bill WIlson
I've gotten away from using tape as much as I used to I hate picking the tiny bits of painters tape left behind on detailed fretwork and I don't like packing tape on top, because of glare and the fact that it prevents mineral spirits from soaking in when trying to remove the pattern. Applying painters tape, pattern, then packing tape seems like too much effort for little benefit, for me, anyway. I typically use hot glue to keep my stacks together, instead of tape, so often I don't use any tape at all. If I'm cutting fine detail in thicker, harder stock that is prone to burning, like cherry, I may use tape to help keep the blade cool. Bfreeman
I glue on the wood . I've had some bad luck with the tape breaking my fret work so now I use glue and mineral sprits .
