New Guy
Nice job. Looks like you found a nice piece of pine. I use mineral oil for a finish. Rob
Sparkey
Very nice. There is a Web site named www.scrollmania.Com where you can draw your own patterns. I have been drawing mine on there then printing them and take them to Office Depot and have them enlarged to 15 inch diameter. DWSUDEKUM
Nicely done Rob. Now if you were to take 2 of those bowls / baskets and stack them together you could make a basket / planter or whatever. Bowls and baskets are fun to make. Thanks for sharing this with us. Rob
Nice looking bowl Rob, what are you going to use to finish it with? Len I'm really not sure Len. Usually I use 50/50 BLO, satin polyurethane spray or oil and beeswax. What would you suggest? Rob

Rob Rob, I don't know what to suggest, that's why I asked you. I've cut a few of these bowls in the past, I never did have much luck getting a good finish on them. Because of the way they are made, it's wise to glue them up before finishing them. Otherwise, I was worried about the rings not sticking together, because of the finish. They have so many holes in them, that it's very hard to dip or spray them. I've tried both methods, and I got mixed results. I tried finishing the rings before gluing together, it was a very aggravating task. There was the issue of the rings sliding around, and it was hard to keep the rings pressed against each other while waiting for the glue to dry. Plus, by doing it this way, I was worried about the rings staying glued together because they were prefinished. So, that's why I asked the question, I was hoping you had a good solution. Len Sadly not Len. I agree that you need to glue them before applying the finish though. An oil finish would be easiest since you could pour it liberally over the entire piece while turning it to get into all the nooks and crannies but I'm not convinced an oil finish on pine will give a good result. Mineral oil might be an alternative but I don't like that it never really dries. I might try wax but would melt it first to apply it in liquid form and buff it once dry with a natural bristle brush. Probably though I will just leave it natural and hope it develops a patina from being handled. I will take it to my next craft fair tomorrow to hold some of Roly's Christmas Mooses and hope it generates some discussion on how it is made. Perhaps I will even sell it if anyone is interested.
