Iguanadon
I thought I'd share my experience lately... I've been using PayPal for credit cards and it worked great for me... until I got a new cellphone last month (Google Pixel). For some reason it didn't like my new phone and I was having all sorts of issues and I'd end up having to key in the credit card number for transactions which is not only a pain in the neck, but it also incurs an additional fee. I emailed them and they sent me a new swiper, but I was still having issues. I decided to sign up for Square and I received my swiper yesterday just in time for my event today and when my PayPal started giving me problems I switched to Square and it worked flawlessly for me the rest of the day. I preferred using PayPal because I just let my balance grow and periodically would transfer money to my bank account. Square sends the money to my bank account automatically a day or two after the transactions. No big deal in the grand scheme of things and now I know that Square works with my phone and I won't have any more hassles.
orangeman
I've had PayPal on my website for several years now and no problem. A year ago I ditched my cc machine with very high fees for the PayPal gizmo on my new Asus tablet. It has worked flawlessly. And I like both mobile payments and website payments going to the same PayPal account. No complaints here.
dgman
I've been using square for several years now without any problems. I use my iPad with a hotspot. I use the iPad just like a register, I enter every sale, cash or credit. That way I I keep track of everything including my starting drawer. I even have a cash drawer. The larger screen of the iPad is easier to read for me and the customers. I can pull up reports at anytime to see how I'm doing, and at the end of the day it will tell me how I did and what should be in my cash drawer. amazingkevin
orangeman
Dan, what kind of program is on your ipad that allows you to do that? Or is part of square. Sounds like what I need. bb

If you're doing an event and want to accept credit cards, you need to register and PayPal will send you a swiper to use on your cellphone. orangeman
PayPal allows you to send them an invoice. Very convenient. Some time ago I asked Leshko (sp?) from Russia to design a name puzzle for me as I had seen some of his previous work. He did the design and sent me an invoice via PayPal which I paid. Very convenient. bb

ike
I don't use credit cards. It's cash or by check if they ask. I have never had a check bounce If i used credit cards i would have to rase the prices by a buck and I like to keep things in the $5. $10, $.15 ect range. Paladin
I've used square for years and have had no problems with them at all. The small percentage that I pay them is far outweighed by the extra sales that I get by being able to accept credit cards. This year I got their chip card reader as well. It cost $50, but they wave your fees for a certain amount of time up to 50, so it doesn't end up costing that much. I like the reports they send as well, and the money is automatically transferred within a day or so.
Rolf
Do you have to be on a wireless network for it to work? I have been thinking about Square for a while.
orangeman
Both Square and payPal require a wireless connection using a smart phone or tablet. PayPal's fee is slightly under 3% and I suspect Square is competitive. Over 50% of my sales are now via credit/debit. I did a show in AL last March and I couldn't get a wireless connection on Sat afternoon because the cell tower was jammed due to so many folks present. Fortunately there was an ATM within 100 yards. Folks don't carry a lot of cash these days. bb

IKE Ike, not to argue with you, but the small fee of less than 3% is less than 30 cents on a $10 item and if lets say half your customers paid by credit card, it's only 15 cents averaged out for all sales. I simply state this so that you take into account the tiny cost that could increase total sales. Just a thought.
Iguanadon
Do you have to be on a wireless network for it to work? I have been thinking about Square for a while. It'll work over WIFI, but if no WIFI is available it uses your cellphone connection. Very minimal data usage. But yes, you'd need a data plan in order to use it. dgman
When I started using square, my sales increased by 50%. My last two shows were about 75% of sales. At only 2.75%. It's a small price to pay for the added sales! WayneMahler and Iguanadon
WayneMahler
I have both PayPal and Square. Square is my go to cc processing. The fees are the same for both companies. I like the convenience of Square sending my money to my account normally next business day. I will add that anyone doing shows, this is a must have ( either product ) as many people like to use plastic for it's convenience. I did away with my cc machine due to the high fees and have not looked back since.
