LarryEA
All ashtrays should have cigarette or cigar burns. Dip them in .... liquid tin... but then you lose the wood look. ... wood you should not use to make an ashtray--- 'Fatwood' ... also, it's a rare piece of wood that wants to be an ashtray. Nothing that I know of. Sorry, I can't help. Edited December 28, 2016 by LarryEA
Lucky2
Jerry, there's nothing I know of, that will stand up to the heat of the cigarette coal. It will melt and burn, and there's always the possibility of the ashtray catching fire from an unattended cigarette. The box/dish your showing is far to deep to be used as an ashtray, it should be no higher then 1 and 1/2 inch high from the interior base. WayneMahler
I have no idea how this could be accomplished. Maybe a custom metal liner, but even then I would be afraid of heat transfer. On the decorative side I can see it.
hawkeye10
Like Larry said all ashtrays should have burn marks. You could use epoxy I think that would hold up and you could clean it. I would use a black or clear epoxy. You could also use a wood like "hard maple" but the burn marks would look ugly.
JLawson56
I have made a few.I haven't found anything that will hold up.

Dan
Find a nice glass tray and make a wood bowl to fit around it. If just the asked go in the bowl I would think they wouldn't be hot enough to ignite the wood. Smoke a pack of cigs and lay them on a board to see what happens. You could just make a bowl and give it to him with a fire extinguisher. DukeNukem, Gordster, Lucky2 and 2 others
hawkeye10
Back in the day when it seemed everyone smoked I would see a lot of burn marks on wood tables and bars. None of them caught fire. Fire takes the path of least resistance so the tobacco will burn but the wood won't. Now I don't want anyone to lay a lit cigarette down on a wood table and go to bed. JimErn
As stated wood will show burn marks. Take the bowl you make, get some tine glass beads (think sand blaster), or good decorative fine sand and fill it 3/4 of the way, if you can use a dremel with a small (3/8) drum and make depressions on each side to rest the cigarette on. heppnerguy
Maybe you could make some wood art that says "No Smoking" and glue it to the top...Just being a wise guy.. I was going to suggest filling it with sand too.. but really I would not use it as an ashtray. Wood is a fuel, you know... might just use is as a desk top decoration, instead Dick heppnerguy DukeNukem

You could put a thick epoxy coating on the upper most edge but other than that the sand will take care of most of it. DW DukeNukem
DukeNukem
It's not a good idea. IKE PS then smoking is not a good idea either. I had to quote you on this and you're right smoking is not a good idea here's the thing I quit February 16 after 44 year of smoking and I feel great, anyway just wanted to throw that in.
