My take on this:

Round off the pieces some more

A bit more contrast in the wood, especially the spine (center) piece

It's not really that bad, at least it looks like a fish

What wood did you use for this?

good one..I too would try to round it out a little. maybe raise the center of the fish and taper to the head, sides and tail a little more. It looks to me that you should use a little thicker wood,if you have it,, 3/4 minimum for intarsia. I love the wood color and the pattern. The more realism the better. Keep up the good work..You are certainly on the right track..
