Blade selection

Lately I've been considering trying different scroll saw blades. I've been using Olson, and not thinking of changing because I have issues. Ive seen on other sights where people say Pegasus makes a better blade. Never used them, and wanted to see what other scrollers think.

I ordered a combo trial package and have been trying them out.  So far I like the #3 Pegas Modified Geometry one for 1/2" or thicker stock.  I did not like the small blades on thin stock, they were far too aggressive for me.  I would suggest ordering a combo pack and try them. 

I would also suggest you should try Flying Dutchman blades.  Maybe it is just me, but I love to try different blades and do often.  I even try many different blades on one project just to see how they work for me.

I use the pegas 2/0 for my scrolling of 1/8 bb plywood and really like them. I never cut thick stuff so that is all I use of their brand.

Like Paul, My go to blades are Flying Dutchman....I have tried several brands and am very happy with the FD brand....Having said that , I do use Pegas #3 and #5 in thicker hardwoods....I also find them too aggressive for most of my projects in BB ply.....Just my two cents !....

I use Flying Dutchman only because I have to buy blades online, and they were the first link I heard of when I bought my saw so I bought a few years worth. They're good blades. I use the thin puzzle blades the most. They cut clean and don't break on me.

 

Having said that, if Olson blades aren't giving you any issues, there's really no point in changing.

I cut a lot of hard (Maple, Walnut, Cherry and thicker BB) and thicker wood (1/2" to 1") and I opted for the Olson PGT #7 or #9. I have not found a blade that stays this sharp for this long and the finish cut is practically polished. I've tried the Pagas and they were OK.  I might need to give the FD a try!

FD blades was always my go to blade until I tried the pegas MG.. Also like olsens PGT blades.. just wish olsen would offer a size smaller than that of the #5..

As a general rule, I think it's good to try different blades.  If for no other reason just to see what you may have been missing.  For many years I used Olson, just about exclusively.  I had a bad experience once with FD #2/0 reverse tooth and just stuck with Olson ever since.  The Mach series were my go to for general fretwork.  I tried FD again when I needed some good spiral blades.  The experienced portrait cutters in my scroll saw club all use FD spirals, so I ordered some.  While ordering, I decided order some FDUR, just to try out.  I was impressed with them and they may supplant the Olson MS blades as my go to blade. 

I tried some PS Wood Super Sharps a while back.  Very good blades, but too expensive for general use, at least for me.  I've not tried Pegas yet, but want to give them a go as well, one of these days.  Moral of the story, I don't think any brand has the best blade in all sizes and tooth configurations, so if you use a wide variety of blade styles, then it pays to try different brands.

I use Olson & FD both. For small detail, & a good sharp bade, my go to blade is the Olson #1 or #3 polar blade. For bigger detail, my go to is FD #2 or #4. I tried ps blades & didn't much care for them. All my cuttin' is cherry, oak, maple, walnut, barn wood, & some soft woods on occasion. Order the variety packs, as mentioned. Then you'll know for certain what works for ya.

I use olson's match blades as my go to blade. i have tried FD blades and they don't hold there edge as well as olsons. I don't care for Olson's #9 blade . it just don't cut vry well, but then again  I don't need that bade  very often . I have had olson's match blade last for an hour or a little more, No reason to change,

My go to blades for 3/4" hardwood puzzles are the Pegas #5 and #7 Modified Geometry blades. I switched from Flying Dutchman several years ago. I will use the #3 occasionally for very intricate cutting.

For puzzles made from 1/4" Baltic Birch I will use the Fkying Dutchman puzzle blade.

the harder the blade the more time in get out of it Fd blades do that.Take your blade and try to touch each end of it if it doesnt break its soft metal.

As you are searching for your personal favorite be sure to try the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse.  Of all the blades I have tried, they are my favorite.
