I made this plaque out of a composite decking material so that it will hold up well outside in the elements. I bought it at Lowe's which stocks it in 1"x12"x96".  I used a piece of the same material for the backer. It ended up thick and heavy. I was afraid if I planed it it would dull my blades. I am pleased with the outcome. It is hard on scroll saw blades..

Very nice sign Dave.Great pattern and cutting..Too bad about how tough it is to cut.Thickness

Must make it stand out boldly.

I really didn't make myself clear. The piece I cut was 3/4" and my backer was 2/4". It wasn't terrible to cut.

Hard on blades is an understatement.

I have a stack of laminate left over from a kitchen redo, so I went to cut it long ago figuring hey hey finally figured out what to use if for.  It just wears the teeth right off the blade - never again.

Saw dust - well let's call it that - is powdery, almost like talc

Well I really like the pattern, and a great job you did, however, I like the end result better if it was wood.  I like wood.

Paul, I totally agree on the wood but............I had a customer bring a plaque back to me a couple of weeks ago that they had bought from me a year ago. They said it was on their porch out of the weather and it really  looked bad. I was new at this hobby at the time and I really don't know what I finished it with.  This sign is going to be up on a tree as you drive down the lane to his campsite.  I didn't think anyone would be up close to inspect it..................just thought I would try something different.

Interesting material to work with.  Hope you wore your dust mask. That composite decking material is made up of different things depending on the brand as  I recall.  Some is plastic, some old tires, it seems I forget what all.  The sign looks very nice though and I am sure the recipients will love it.  Thanks for sharing.

Great job on that Dave always good to try different materials to cut on , Got me wondering now what pvc cladding would cut like now to make signs that would last years if it is able to be cut may chip a fair bit though I may just stop at my local dealers and see what scraps are in skip :)
