Blue painters tape

I tried the blue painters tape on the wood and glue the pattern to the tape today and I must say I have never had a pattern come off so easy in my life. No more scraping patterns with my pocket knife no more getting hot fingers while trying to loosen the pattern with a hair dryer. I should have found this forum years ago.

Welcome!  Glad to see a new face now and again.  Everyone gets tired of reading stuff from Iggy.

Depending on how much you scroll and the size of your patterns, clear shelf liner paper is just as good as blue painters tape and is a lot cheaper.  I use massive amounts of it.

I used to order it from Amazon but they stopped carrying the 12" wide so I started ordering from Walmart.

I will try the shelf paper and see how it works. I hate going to Wally World  I wonder if the Dollar stores have it?

Some of the dollar tree stores do have it..but not all of them.. I have one store here that carry's it.. It's in a smaller roll.. and if memory serves me correct it's actually cheaper at Walmart.. .

I have been using the blue tape for 12 years or so, the 3m tape, but have had trouble finding the original type. The newer tape is listed as multi surface tape and I have had problems with the tape lifting between close cuts. I have tried Blue Hawk brand and it does not stick well either. Walmart still has the original tape but not sure if it is being discontinued by 3m or not. Just wondering if anyone else has had problems with the multi surface tape?

Iggy,

Your process looks expensive to me. Why not use a very light coat of temporary adhesive like Elmer's on the pattern and then use packaging tape over the pattern for lubrication of the blade? If you are using pine and poplar there is probably no need for the packaging tape to prevent burning of the wood but it would extend the blade life.

Maybe the type of cutting I do.. but I personally never found any improvement in using the packing tape for blade lubrication or cooling it from burning my projects.. I cut a lot of cherry which burns pretty easy too.. I no longer use clear tape.. just the plain ol shelve liner and the pattern.. I do use self adhesive shipping labels to print my patterns onto.. maybe that stuff is doing the same thing as the packing tape?

Hey bb,

Not sure what you mean by expensive.  $5.64 a roll that covers 36' of board, it comes to less than a nickel per puzzle.  It peels right off saving me a lot of time after cutting as there is no residue or anything.  What am I misunderstanding?  I don't worry about blade lubrication or lifespan.  I get 4 to 6 puzzles per blade.
