Just upgraded to a new playtoy

Well I guess I finally had enough with my 788. I had it in the shop at the end of the year last year and the Dewalt dealer could not figure out what was wrong with it so they just gave me a new 788. At the time I thought that was great in order to keep a happy customer. Well I took that saw back to them in late June and they had it for about a month till late July to fix a tension issue. I took it back to them this week for a bad knocking in the back of the saw and the same tension issue. Well the will most likely have it for another month trying to fix it. Meanwhile I have been using my Porter Cable saw which was a backup saw. 

I made the discussion to make the Jump to a high end saw sense i do mostly Intarsia. I just order a new BM 26. I had been thinking about upgrading for awhile but was waiting on Funds. Things seemed to fall in place over the past few weeks and I sold a few "big" ticket items in my shop which helped me cover the cost of a new upgraded saw. I was following all the posts lately from Iggy and everyone else to see how all the service issues & concerns washed out.

Now the wait begins for my new play toy.

Hey Brian, congrats on the new Hawk order.  Funny, I have my newest Dewalt in my car to take with me today to Raleigh to the service center to get it looked at under warranty.  We'll see how that goes.

I'm glad you still decided to go with the Hawk even after following my buying process.  The saw, so far, runs great now that all has been figured out.  The customer service at Bushton Manufacturing is solid and they'll do whatever it takes to make things right.  I hope you get to simply plug yours in and start using it when it arrives.

I will... I'm not holding my breath.  If I wasn't already heading to Raleigh anyway, I wouldn't even bother driving the 150 miles to do this.  That's the closest service center to me.

My 9 Dewalts on the shelve just need re greasing but who wants to do that,wish they would have put car axle grease in the bearings ,that's going to be there forever.I'm using the 10th one which needs repair ,same issue but for some reason it's holding out.I love my Dewalts.

I had a problem with my saw last year The Motor went bad on it and they had it for 6 weeks untill I caled Dewalt and they got it out to me in 4 days. They sent there rep down to find out what was the problem with the service  station. I got it fixed for nothing. I got a new motor and the bearings paacked. It has ran great ever since I now have about 200 hours on it. No problems so far.

Congratulations Brian on the new saw.  Look forward to hearing how you like it.

 

That's a bummer Ike that you were without the saw for so long last year but great that Dewalt took care of it and made sure you didn't get charged for it.  Sounds like you basically got a "new" saw with the new motor and bearings packed.  Good for you.

I'm very curious here regarding your DW788 problems. As I have posted prior, I bought a used Type 1. It had a few small problems but after doing some research, and watching a few videos, I have fixed everything that mattered to me. My question here is, why take your saw to a service center. Fix it yourself. Everything that can go wrong on this saw is fixable and usually doesn't cost anything but your time. They are really a very simple creature to work on. And the required tools don't amount to much. I did go out and buy a small arbor press to push new bearings in and out on all the arms but really never did use it. All the bearings were made happy with just some cleaning and greasing. And the knocking noise is another easy fix. It's just a matter of doing some research and watching youtube videos.

Saw is less than 8 month old and is still under Warranty and I can build anything out of wood but when it comes to mechanical things I'm not that good with fixing things.

There is starting to be enough of us BM owners to provide a decent support base if you have issues.  The saw is close enough to G4 that those owners can provide support as well.

Are you a top feeder or a bottom feeder?  If you are a bottom feeder, you won't have much of a learning curve.  If you are a top feeder, it will take a little more patience to get the hang of it.  After I learned the "trick", top feeding became trivial as well.

When you take to Bushton, after the saw is setup at their shop for optimal performance, have them take a thin magic marker and draw a thin line around the base (on the top of the table), and also on the bolts on the bottom.  If anything moves in transit, this would make it easy to get everything back in the original location.  Luckily, they did this on my saw, at least for the top base.

You got to love the Dewalt Authorized service centers. I took my 788 that is less than 8 months old in because it was knocking really bad. When I dropped it off I when home and order a new Hawk which should be shipping anytime. I already know some of the comments that will follow. I called the Dewalt Authorized service center yesterday to follow up on my saw sense it has been just over 3 weeks sense i dropped it off.

Service manager told me they took the unit apart and tighten everything up and put it back together. Saw runs great & cuts great for about 5 -10 minutes than there is an annoying knocking in the back (which is why i took it there in the 1st place). I felt like telling him NO SH....; but I may have thought it but didn't say it. So I asked him what the are going to do. His respond as an authorized service manager was - Well sense we can not run the saw without the housing removed to find the problem they are waiting on a new saw to come in and they are going to replace my saw. Hopefully this new saw will last longer than that replacement saw.

Nice thing it looks like i will have 2 NEW saws in the shop shortly. The new Hawk that I bought & the new replacement Dewalt.

I Guess the Authorized Service center need to watch some YouTube videos on how the repair & service their machines while they are under warranty.

Good news all around then.  Two new saws.  From what I hear from everyone who takes their Dewalts to the service centers - most of the time it seems you end up getting a new saw if its still under warranty.  Makes me wonder if everyone there is like me and has no idea how to service and repair them! ;):lol:  Sounds like I could get hired if that is the case! :o I can easily say, "don't know so we are getting you a new saw".  At least most people would be happy at that point! ;)
