Need some advice about dust collection

Hi Gang

Yeah i know it has been discussed millions of times here I am sure. I need some advice, I wear hearing aids and even if I turn them off, my 6 gallon shop vac is loud. I have it hooked to a dust deputy but haven't used it with my scroll saw yet. I mainly use it for my sanding table and general shop cleanup. I have an airbrush compressor running on my saw, so it blows it away but am thinking of getting something better. I thought a wall mount dust collector like theyhave at rocklers, and also a fein turbo 1 vac that is supposed to be quiet.  Ideas......willl the dust collecter catch the fine dust from my scrollsaw?

Thanks much

Bill

I pretty much copied this setup, after buying a Fein.

I love my Fein! I am very happy with this set up. .  I have to fiddle with it now and again to get the suction where I want it.  I keep tweaking it and it is just getting better and better.  I do not know why I didn't do this years ago.  Other than the vacuum I probably have less than $8 in PVC but the Loc-line cost around $70. for the two machines I have. Not that much for one.

The loudest sound is the air sucking.  It is louder than the noise of the saw and the vacuum.  The Fein is a couple GB louder than a Festool and a couple hundred cheaper.  I do not know how to make the air sound quieter. I think if you turn off your aids it will not bother you.

I also do not have the "trap" that Rolf added, but I may some day.  This setup is simple and effective.

I use to have a box fan with a filter and used the saws blower.  No comparison.  I have not vacuumed my saws since I made this set up and I can go to bed at night and breath after time in the shop.

Oh, Ya! You will love it.  In the scrolling world, my Fein Vac is the best investment I have made next to my scroll saws.  Not trying to sell Fein in particular, any good dust extraction vacuum will do.  I I just bought the Fein because it was good and somewhat cheaper than the Festool.  Like I said in another post, yours is rated quieter than my Fein or the Festool.  If you take the time and setup a dust collect like Rolf's  you will, like me keep saying why didn't I do this years ago.  I still keep thinking of improvements to make to my setup, but even if I never get to making them I am 99% better off than I was.  CONGRATULATIONS!  You stole that puppy....!

I think I'm going to try to set up some kind of cyclone separator and then I'll work on an over/under vac system like you guys have. I like the flex lines (Line Loc?)too. I'll have to get some of that stuff on order once I see what I need. Do you recomment 3/4" or 1" pvc piping? The guy I bought this thing from suggested some sort of a bleeder to lessen the vacuum when not needed. Do you folks have anything like that incorporated? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm all ears.

I drove up to Redondo Beach today and picked up my new addition. I think I got a good deal. $170. It's 8 years old and in mint condition.

Ray great deal!  Was that at a yard sale ? I bought the Festool vac after my wife bought me the Festool Random RO for Christmas. Adapting it to my saw was an after thought.  I used 3/4 pipe if someone builds it with 1" please let us know how that works for you.

Regarding noise, I put a weight on my foot pedal so that the saw and vac were running then went upstairs to the room above my shop and I can't hear it at all. A good thing since that is where my wife reads etc.

My vac is variable speed and I have it at it's lowest setting and it works well there. I have not seen the need for a bleeder. I have thought about putting a ball valve in the lower leg to increase the suction to the top. The saws blower is not used at all so there is nothing to blow the dust around. My next challenge is to see what I can do about my Makita Chop saw,  as it is the worst dust contributor now even with my central system connected to it.

Yes, miter saws are the worst. I won't even use mine inside my small shop. It goes outside when used. It's so darn heavy that I try very hard to find ways around using it. I may sell it and buy a smaller one. I don't need a 12" anymore. As to the vac, I was wondering if my vac could be "customized" to run variable. I know that in some cases, it depends on the type of motor. I don't know if they changed motors in the early to late vacs or not. It would be interesting to know. I'm going to try setting up my saw with 1" pvc if only to possibly cut down on any whistling at the tips. I'll have to get my configuration first and then order some of the Loc-Line pieces as needed. I hope I'm not making a mistake that will make the whole thing too bulky. I'll do some more thinking on that. Also, I'm thinking about incorporating some sort of cyclone separator into the system. Lot's to think about. Thanks for your input.

Oh, and to your first question, it was on Craigslist.

Ray,  I think the 1" PVC would work fine.  Might even make the setup more rigid.  The Loc-Line does not come in 1", the closest is 3/4".  so I don't think use 1" PVC will help the air noise.  But, more rigid is good.  Looking at the picture of you vac hose, it doesn't look like it has a bleeder hole, it may but I can't tell.   If not I think the ball valve would work fine in your setup.  I bought my Loc-Line for here: http://www.modularhose.com/

It worked out to be a little cheaper than Amazon.  You might check it, Amazon prices change often.  The Loc-Line turned out to be more expensive than I thought.  I purchased 2 of the kits, some extra hose, and some extra threaded connectors (to connect Loc-Lome to the PVC.  The kits have a 3/4" nozzle and a 5/8" nozzle.  I wish I have purchased some extra 3/4" nozzles so I could use them on all ends.  Keep in mind I have set this up on two saws, so you will not need as much "stuff" as I did, unless you have two saws.

There are numerous threads on dust collection and most can probably be found by typing "dust collection" in the search box near the top right of the page.  Here is one old thread with a lot of comments which may be of interest to some.  I have kept tinkering some since 2013 but you will get the basics of what I and others do from the thread.

Thanks for the great pics of your system. I will use them as reference while building mine. While I have a DW788 instead of the Excalibur, most of your ideas will cross over in one way or another. With your permission I'm going to download and save your pics.
