Runa, I think your lamps look amazingly nice, I wouldn't mind owning any of them.

Len

Thanks Len for the vote of confidence. I am quite nervous about putting them out there because I feel my motivation would be affected if nobody is interested. I am really hoping I can sell them to cover my interest in learning scroll sawing and continue making more things and save up to get a decent scroll saw.

Runa, get your feet wet, put them up for sale. You never know, they may be good sellers. We're our own worst enemies, we never think our work is good enough to sell. Especially, when first starting out. You will find out what others think of your work, and if you really want to continue trying to sell your wares. Plus, the sooner you start selling your work, the sooner you will start raising money for your new saw. You may be surprised at how well things sell, then you'll be sorry that you didn't start selling earlier then you did. If you don't try selling your work now, how will you know it will sell later on?

Hi Runa:

That last thing you want to do is get discouraged (unmotivated) if things don't go your way

I have found over the years that things I thought would sell didn't and things I thought

would never sell went like hotcakes. Like Len is saying, put them out there and see what happens

If they sell, you are well on your way, if they don't sell find something that will and keep going

And yes, I agree with the above, they look good

Good luck,  and keep it fun

They all look very nice but I will point something out that has become an interest because of the society we have turned into and that is sue happy. One thing I have always tried to stay away from is items that take some thinking and some common sense to use. Such as toys and puzzles,  candle holders, lights weather battery operated or electric, and anything that can become a hazard in some way. I should not have to state the obvious problems that can arise with the use of these items but if misused and unfortunate things happen, people look to pass blame very quickly. Over my lifetime I never wanted to become a target. Yes you can carry insurance but is it worth it. With toys you need to be aware of paints, size of objects so not swallowed, fingers getting injured and so on. Same goes for candles. Have to watch the finish used, proximity of candle to wood and so forth. Batteries can leak. Electric sockets need to be wired correctly following codes and the wires must be UL rated and unable to be easily pulled and the list goes on. Yes people have gone on to make products like those mentioned and never ran into problems but there are cases, some never make the news that have gone the other way. This is not to discourage you but to make you aware of possibilities. Good luck in your ventures. Happy scrolling. My suggestion is to make those into sun catchers with colored plastic behind them.

I think the question not getting answered or even address is "what will they go for".  There is one of the main reasons I don't sell, because I never have any idea of a price.  To come up with a price you have to understand your audience and what sell in your area.  I have no answer for you.  Your products look real nice.  If you want to sell them locally maybe go to some local craft shows, bazaars and  such to get an idea of what others a selling crafts for.

Every time someone (friends) look some of my stuff I hear "wow you should sell those", "those would certainly sell easy" but I never see any of them get their wallet out.

I'll also say, toughen up.  If you are easily discouraged, do not go into business.  You have to have self confidence to sell.  You have a good product, you are proud of it, show it.  I say this not to discourage, I have the same problem when it comes to selling, I hem and haw around and don't have the confidence to just say what I want for something.  For all the times I have been scrolling I have only sold two items, and I received more than I asked, because someone else actually sold them for me and he didn't think I asked enough.  He was correct.

Also with hobby stuff, I don't think you will make an hourly wage.  Other, and they sell and know more about it than me, will disagree they figure a wage in.  I am a slow scroller, I could not imagine someone paying me even minimum wage for the things I scroll.

Thank you everyone.

Paul/Scrappile, I completely understand where you are coming from. I have worked in technology industry and traveled the world and have made good money too and certainly dont think I can ever make that much unless I am willing to get back in that rat race. I have a 3 year old and giving up my career to be there for him was something I couldnt put a price tag on. I also know that not working has had a huge impact on how we live so I was hoping to achieve two things. First my thirst to learn and create both of which are satisfied scrolling and second supplement to income in anyway I can that will help me. There is an arts fair where I live every first saturday, I will get out to the next one and then figure out my marketing strategy. Being quite new to this, I heavily rely on all your experienced feedback and all of the input has been tremendous in helping me continue working hard to improve. I love the aspect that I am creating these. I have always wanted too and the fact that I am is pure joy :-)

I love what you have done Runa and if it were me, I'd be putting them out there for sale. This is the right time of year to do it too. I see that Amazon is going to be opening something similar to Etsy too. Should be interesting.

P.S. I see we are neighbors. Not far apart.

This is what got me into selling my work.. I quit my day job to be a stay at home dad.. that was 18 years ago.. BEST thing I ever did.. and best thing for my kids / family.. once the kids was bigger I started messing around with my dads old scroll saw.. took off from there.. Living on one income.. as a mid 20 year old and just starting what I call "life" you sure learn what is a necessary purchase and one that is just a want / luxury.. did without on a lot of things for several years.. and still do.. trying to help my daughter through college and get my youngest a car to drive in a couple years..

I do exactly the same JT.. I made a couple of puzzles.. then thought about the liability that could go wrong if it got into the hands of the wrong child.. Made candle trays.. never sold one.. they sit here in my house..

Only way I might consider doing these type of lights.. is if I was using LED strip lights.. probably the safest light available.. not really any heat off them.. for a fire hazard etc....

I struggled with staining these appropriately and finally got it done to "this will be ok" mode. Not intending to sell these particular ones since I plan to personally use them but wanted to take pictures to see if there is a interest in local community for these types of lamp. What do you think I can list them for?

I think your idea is brainstorming great. One of a kind ,not the norm.Keep the price high ,you can always go down,But when you give them away you have to make more. These will attract customers to your table and look at other items of interest.

Hey I like them to. Where did you get the patterns? I would like some for Christmas.

Hawkeye, I used pumpkin carving patterns. Two of them (witch and the wizard) are for private use only so I wont be selling them but a lot of other free pumpkin carving pattern out there that would work great! :-)
