Jskd82 Posted November 3, 2017 Report Posted November 3, 2017 So i posted recently about purchasing my first saw and some issues I was having but I got those issues sorted out. Originally I bought the scroll saw for cutting out slingshots, but I am now getting more interested in doing actual scroll work like portraits and designs. I am really struggling with this WEN to do portraits as the pinless blade adapters are a pain to use, also the fact that I can't tilt the arm out of the way to insert the blade from the top of my work piece is a huge negative. Anyways the saw would work great for my original intended purpose but now I think I might need to upgrade or is there an easier way to insert the pinless blades into the starter drill holes? If not what would you guys recommend I buy? Quote
fredfret Posted November 3, 2017 Report Posted November 3, 2017 Check Craigslist for Dewalt dw788, excaliber, rbi, hagner. Prices new are 500, 800, 1200, 1800 respective. Look at each for features. I have a Dewalt and a rbi both have pluses and minuses. Welcome to the addiction. Fred fret Wichita,ks OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Jskd82 Posted November 3, 2017 Author Report Posted November 3, 2017 Thanks, I have been eyeing up the Dewalt as I am a huge believer in the buy once cry once theory lol. I'm also looking up the porter cable but I'm leaning towards a Dewalt, unfortunately the used market in my area is very small, so I would have to buy brand new. Quote
bandaideman Posted November 3, 2017 Report Posted November 3, 2017 Christmas is coming and several stores will be putting them on sale or sale prices on line keep your eyes peeled. last dewalt I got was the regular price 549 and then Rocker put it on sale for 300. Or start hinting in earnest. SCROLLSAW703 1 Quote
Jskd82 Posted November 3, 2017 Author Report Posted November 3, 2017 Well I just pulled the trigger... I ordered it from lowes cause they had free shipping. Pretty sure if I bought it for $300 from woodcraft it would be the same price I'm buying it from lowes for after their shipping charges... I live on an island so we don't have much choice:( The wife seems interested in this hobby so I got the green light lol WayneMahler and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
Lucky2 Posted November 4, 2017 Report Posted November 4, 2017 So, what brand of saw did you purchase? You posted that you were interested in two different brand of saws, I would like to know which one you bought? Plus, where on earth is Unk, I checked out your map, but there's no names of places on it? Len Quote
Jskd82 Posted November 4, 2017 Author Report Posted November 4, 2017 I ordered the Dewalt 788, I'm from Hawaii... OCtoolguy 1 Quote
hotshot Posted November 4, 2017 Report Posted November 4, 2017 A Dewalt for 300 all the way to Hawaii, I’m a bit surprised. At that price point, I don’t think you could have done better. OCtoolguy and WayneMahler 2 Quote
Jskd82 Posted November 4, 2017 Author Report Posted November 4, 2017 No I didn't get it for $300 It was $500 shipped. I wish it was $300 but I was just replying to bandaideman saying it may go on sale for $300. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

A friend just bought a Porter Cable saw from Lowes. He intends to return it because of a bad vibration and difficult blade replacement. For the $$ I don't think you can beat the DeWalt. bb OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Sparkey Posted November 4, 2017 Report Posted November 4, 2017 Congrats on ordering the DeWalt. I have had mine for around five years and love it. I would recommend two things. Turn the switch on and put some tape over it to keep the dust out and get a foot switch to turn the saw on and off. Jskd82 and OCtoolguy 2 Quote

Jskd82 Posted November 10, 2017 Author Report Posted November 10, 2017 (edited) Well I ordered from Lowes with free shipping but they took a week to ship it and now I find out they are slow boating it to me so it will take 4-6 weeks! I can't wait that long.... So I ordered from Amazon with priority shipping and it will be here tomorrow then I will just return the one from Lowes when it arrives. I've got an itch and I can't wait to start some scroll work! Intarsia has really captured my interest, but I'll start with the simple basics Edited November 10, 2017 by Jskd82 Dave Monk and meflick 2 Quote
