Popular Post Chunkthekid
Hello folks, I have been pretty quiet lately, there has been a lot going on with the holidays and other projects. My wife and I have been tossing around the idea of moving into her childhood home so I have been hesitant on starting anymore projects in the garage since we might be packing it all up soon. Well, yesterday we were told we were ok to start moving in right away. I know none of that matters so I will get to the point of the topic. The house we are moving into is much bigger with a finished basement. My wife has already told me the basement is mine. So I am going from a cramped little garage that is full of every tool I own (lawn, auto, wood, metal) all stacked on top of each other, to a basement with room to spare for my woodworking and a two car garage for everything else. Needless to say, I am VERY excited! Being able to start from scratch with this much space is about as much fun as I think I can have lol. And now I can buy tools without having to worry about where the hell I'm going to put them. I will be picking the brains of all of you that have shops in your basements soon to figure out the best ways to ventilate. Here are a few pics of what I've got and what I'm getting. The garage doesn't look as bad as usual as I had already taken a load of stuff to the other garage. Have a good day everyone. Scrappile
Yes dust collection is very important. Dust from the basement shop seem to make all through the house. Good thing is, who cares what the weather is outside? OCtoolguy, SCROLLSAW703 and Chunkthekid
SCROLLSAW703
Congrats on the new house, & your new shop! You'll have space to think now! I agree! dust ventilation is number one on the list. I had a basement shop for 20+ years. Lighting, ventilation, & keepin' dust from the rest of the house needs to be considered. When you do finish work, I always hung shower curtains at the doors, & put window fans in the windows. Keep it clean! Use every inch of wall space for tools & etc. you can. Keep your wood out of your work area, if possible. And put your tools on casters so you can move them when you need to. Runa
Congratulations!! I have my shop in backyard under a canopy because our garage is backed with afew motorcycles and ton of my husbands garbage that he would never use, doesnt want to give up and he keeps collecting these things he'd never use. Anyway i would love to even get some garage space someday soon. OCtoolguy
barb.j.enders
Congrats on the new place. Looks like you can have separate rooms. One for cutting, one for finishing & one for storage! OCtoolguy
Bill WIlson
Congrats on the move and the prospects of more shop space. That's going to be awesome! I'd probably want to remove/reconfigure some of the partitions to make the space more efficient but having wall space is priceless. Do you have walk in/out access to the basement? Claymore
Blimey that basement is sooooooooooooooooooo clean and tidy you could do medical operations there! with careful planning you will have the ultimate workshop.....1st thing is to sort the dust extraction out as its easier to do that when the place is empty and always make more sockets than you think you need for future machine upgrades etc. I have yet to see a lovely dry basement here in Scotland as they all seem to be dark damp and full of critters....8-) Have fun and keep us posted on the workshop. OCtoolguy
Congrats on your new space. Use it well. I always dreamed of a basement all to myself. Be sure to put a couch, bed, tv and reefer down there too. Ray
MrsN
Congrats on the space! I got moved inside early in my sawdust making career and won't give it up. I love having heat and ac. If the floor is painted concrete, you might consider putting down some sort of flooring before you move all the stuff in. I used peel and stick vinyl tiles in my basement shop and it really helped warm up the space and made it easier to clean. You also may consider taking the doors off of one of the closets. I currently occupy a bedroom and am frequently fighting with the bi-fold doors and would love to build a shelving system for the closet. Lucky2
Chunk, congrats on the shop upgrade, you will soon be out of space again though. I upped my shop size a few years ago, back then I thought I would never outgrow the new shop. Wrong! I would like to build a new larger shop now,my present shop is far to small now that I've gotten into turning. One thing I would like to suggest, if you haven't already thought of doing so. Is to take one of those rooms, and to turn it into nothing but a finish room. Use that room for no other purpose, other then for finishing purposes. Chunkthekid
I wanted to give a couple updates on the new space. I haven't gotten a whole lot done yet but I suppose I can't move in and spend all of my time in the new shop, there is still the rest of the house to contend with. Plus I am still trying to get the other house ready for sale. Stack on the holidays and I am just now realizing how busy I've been I attached a couple pictures to show my progress. bobscroll, jbrowning and Travis
Chunkthekid
Old dust collection vs new! I still plan to buy a ventilation unit that will clean the air while I am working but this upgrade sure put my wife at ease for now. Has anyone had any experience with this type of collector? It is about as loud as my shop vac but has a deeper hum instead of the squeal of the shop vac, which I can live with. Most of the time it will be running I will have headphones on anyway. Seems to have good suction so far, although my shop was pretty clean when I installed this last night so I haven't really tested it yet. bobscroll
