Montserrat Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 My grandson (6) wanted a gift for his teacher. So he drew an apple and a reindeer. I applied his pics to a piece of cherry and cut them out. He then applied walnut oil with a paper towel. He was a very happy camper! Birchbark, Dan, frankorona and 5 others 8 Quote

Scrappile Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 That is great time spent. I did the same with my Grandson when he stayed with us for a week this summer. Phantom Scroller, Lucky2 and Montserrat 3 Quote
MrsN Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 What a great thing to do! I have done this with some of my students, and had them do the cutting. It is a good introduction to using the scroll saw. Montserrat 1 Quote
rdatelle Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 That's a great idea. I will have to try that when my Grandkids come over. Montserrat 1 Quote

MrsN Posted December 14, 2017 Report Posted December 14, 2017 It depends a bit on the kid. I started my step-son and a neighbor kid when they were about 6 with actual cutting. Before that my step-son would sometimes sit on my lap while I did some cutting. They grew up with lots of tools and handywork happening around them so it was a pretty natural thing for them to do. My niece is 9 and I started her on a scrolling thing the last time she was at my house. At school currently my youngest students are 11. I think that if the kid has an interest in using the saw, and can understand that it can hurt them, they are often ready. Quote
Dave Monk Posted December 14, 2017 Report Posted December 14, 2017 Both the kids and the teacher got a gift. Montserrat 1 Quote

Lucky2 Posted December 15, 2017 Report Posted December 15, 2017 Monti, that was awfully nice of you, and a very good idea. Not only will your grandson remember you doing this for him, but it will be a keepsake for the teacher as well. Len Quote
