where to buy wood for intarsia

Scroll sawing as a hobby is, for the most part, very inexpensive. I am starting to get into more intarsia work and am amazed by the price of the exotic wood. It's hard to justify buying a full board when you only need a few square inches of it.

Where do you guys buy your wood? Do we justify buying a full board and using only a small piece as a longer term investment? How do you store the wood to keep it straight and not warped. Does anyone buy up scraps from another woodworker?

Thanks for your insight.

Some of the exotic woods can get pricey.I am fortunate to have a local shop that does custom trim/cabinet work and they stock several exotics as well as domestics. They sell as much or as little as I need. As long as they can still use or resell the board.

Woodcraft sells smaller pieces, but sometimes cost more than buying longer lenghts. They will cut off pieces (atleast the local one will) as long as it leaves a good sized pieces( 4 foot +) to sell.

Check your area for local cabinet shops, woodworking shops you might be able to get their scraps cheap or even free. I don't buy scraps, but when my scrap bin gets to full I usually box it up and give it to someone. I just ask them to pay shipping.

Check to see if you can find a local woodworker. Post on the LumberJocks forum and ask for cutoffs. Someone local might hook you up (they're usually pretty generous). Or at the very least give you a great deal. You can also check www.wooddealsonline.com. Its all mail-order and usually have smaller pieces at pretty good prices. You can often buy scrap grab-bags for pretty reasonable too.
