WayneMahler
Has anyone that does shows or takes on special projects have requests for a wolf portrait or scene? I have had a few e mails and phone calls lately asking me if I did them. I am just curious if this a normal thing or some sort of new fad or something. I'll admittedly state I spend most of my time in my shop working. But between the Mrs. and I we have received several questions about this. So my curiosity is piqued and the reason for me asking here. Thanks for any and all information. crupiea

dgman
Hey Wayne, yes I do cut Wolf portrait type patterns and they do sell. Also Eagles and bears sell well too. WayneMahler
kmmcrafts
I have a wolf portrait that I stack cut 4 of back when my daughter was in 4th grade ( graduated high school this last summer ) for a silent auction fund raiser.. the one we auctioned for the fund raiser brought $50.. I listed the other 3 on the online venues I sell at and also did a couple local craft shows.. only ever sold one other than the fund raiser one.. Now I did well with a wolf dream catcher for a few rounds but that also died out.. That all said... I've never really done very well with selling portrait work other than cars.. then it's not even all that great.. WayneMahler

JTTHECLOCKMAN
For some reason Wolf items are popular. I have sold 2 at the last show this year and a few last year of a wolf clock. It is in the photo at the bottom right corner. Sorry I do not have a better photo at this time. But I put a wolf clock in it and that is the clincher. Can't seem to find the photo. Will look elsewhere. kmmcrafts
That is Beautiful Rolf!! How big is that? I've always wanted to try my hand at intarsia... bought a book on it with some good patterns in it a couple years ago.. but never did give it a try.. Must be the A.D.D. or A.D.H.D. ( not sure I have either of those) .. as I get way off side tracked.. I say I'll do it then I see a fretwork pattern I just have to cut and so on so forth LOL.. Going to make it a point to do this new year... I think I just made my new years resolution.. LOL

dgman
Here's a picture of my last show. Wolf pattern with wooden feathers. It is a Sue Mey pattern. I sold it for $45. danny

JTTHECLOCKMAN
I too at one time wanted to get into intarsia work. Bought a whole bunch of books but never pursued it. I have all the tools for it but just do not have the artistic side needed. I can not envision art in 3D. I am a flat woodworker. Love to look at it though and some amazing people do work that is unthinkable. That wolf Rolf looks great. ScollSaw Slasher
Go for it on the intarsia Kevin. It really increased my love of scroll sawing. But it's really tough to make any money at it as your doing now.. It's similar to the gigantic heirloom clocks. Too much time and not enough remuneration. But it will certainly bring out your artistic juices. So make the Mrs a gift on the side. kmmcrafts
ScollSaw Slasher
And speaking of wolves, here's one I did a couple of months ago. A JGR pattern. Looks more like a huskie than a wolf. Obviously, haven't sold it as yet because I just snapped the pic.
spirithorse
Hi, Wayne, Perhaps it really depends on where you live but, in my area wolves have always been very popular and I have always been fascinated with wolf images. Some just look more like dogs than wolves but, some patterns really catch my eye. I don't do many crafts shows but, would make things that appeal to me, take them to work, and usually get a lot of orders. Not necessarily orders for the items I took but, people would say, for example, if you can do a wolf, can you do something like a (insert favorite dog breed here). I think I did sell a total of 5 of the Judy Gale Roberts wolf that Scrollsaw Slasher shows. Some people wanted lighter or darker color variations but, all of the ones I did were stained pine and no variations of the pattern other than the colors. Since I used no exotic wood, I sold them cheap. God Bless! Spirithorse WayneMahler
Lucky2
Wayne, when I was selling things, Wolves were one of my biggest sellers and requested items. It didn't matter what the Wolf cutting was, it would sell. Len WayneMahler

I believe I used three different stains to achieve these results. The pattern came from a book by Patrick Spielman and Kerry Shirts called Scroll Saw Art. https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0806928972/ref=tmm_pap_used_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=used&qid=&sr=
Rolf
The wolf is the only piece I have sold directly, I have done many other pieces but they have been mostly donations for local organization fund raisers, and a few gifts. Out of all the things I do with my scroll saw Intarsia is the most satisfying as it really gives me the opportunity to add my personal touch. The wolf was a Bruce Worthington with a bit of Janette's touch and I played with the eyes and a couple of other areas until it looked right to me. I don't thing the average craft fair is the right venue for intarsia sales unless they are smaller fun things. My plan is to build an inventory of pieces some of my own designs that reflect my community, nautical and and Ice scooters that are unique to Bellport, and then have a booth at an annual art fair called Artists on the lane, that happens here every fourth of July. I will seriously have to consider setting up a Square account so that I can take credit cards. The Lane is the main street that goes from our village down to the dock. Scott, that is beautiful! I really like the backer and love the Wolf design. You need to do it again in 3D just for fun. Edited December 30, 2017 by Rolf

Some so very basic when I first started some 35 years ago. Wonder if they are worth any money today for collectables?? One of these days I may pursue it but right now I have so much on my plate it makes my head spin but I am having fun.
WayneMahler
I want to thank everyone for their insights and artwork. I have gain quite a bit of insight here. I'm in the process of getting ready for Easter, Valentines Day and like like. I won't take Intarsia to a craft show since the price would be too much for some of the shows I do. I do take some portraits I do that run in the low triple digits and they really catch a persons eye and interest. I will be adding some wolves to my inventory and see how it goes. Once again thank you very much for sharing all this information and insight. Probably one of the best features about the village, It's members danny
