dansnow Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 Hey folks, my son is looking for a mini table saw, with 4" or 5 1/2" blade, that can cut up to 3/4" hardwood. He would like to keep the price at $150 or lower if possible. Any suggestions? Most everything we've found so far is doing good to cut 1/4" balsa. Quote
tgiro Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 I have heard some decent things about the Rockwell and Worx Blade Runner saws. They use jigsaw blades instead of circular blades, which means you can cut curves as well as straight cuts. The issue with the mini saws is that, they are very small. If he is going to try to cut lumber, longer than about four foot, he may have problems. These saws are designed for really short pieces. If he is going to be cutting standard size pieces of wood, he might want to look at a contractors worksite saw. They're probably more than $150, but they are compact, can handle large pieces, and, when you aren't using them - fold them up and put them away. He wants to be sure he can adjust the table and blade for precision and square cutting. Good luck Quote
dansnow Posted December 30, 2017 Author Report Posted December 30, 2017 We have a full 10" table saw for big stuff. He is looking for a light duty to cut small strips and pieces for some of the stuff he makes. Quote

I finally found an old sears saw, super light with an adjustable fence for $20 bucks at a yard sale,Years later my friend needed to borrow it to customize some kitchen drawers for a customer .He gave me $20 bucks to use it that day.He didn't want to drag his shop saw there.Best $20 i ever spent! bobscroll 1 Quote
JimErn Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 Have you considered just buying a 5.5" skill saw (wired, battery saws are anemic) and building a saw table around it? https://www.amazon.com/WORX-WORXSAW-4-1-Compact-Circular/dp/B00ZFR4GJE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1514633556&sr=8-3&keywords=5+inch+circular+saw multi[ple choices https://www.amazon.com/WORX-WORXSAW-4-1-Compact-Circular/dp/B00ZFR4GJE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1514633556&sr=8-3&keywords=5+inch+circular+saw#HLCXComparisonWidget_feature_div Quote

The chuck would accommodate a small sanding wheel. But the rpm's would have to be reduced to not burn cherry. Not sure what you would use the chuck for. Maybe immaterial if your only use is to saw. Keep us posted. bb Quote
dansnow Posted December 31, 2017 Author Report Posted December 31, 2017 According to specs the speed is variable. We'll see. Son might set it up so the side power output can be used as a disc sander, or you can attach a flex shaft for detail sanding and polishing. Quote

Don't have it set as a table saw, works fine. Quote
