jbrowning
I have been to all my wood people here in Colorado Springs and none of them have Poplar wood with purple running through it. Is anyone else finding the same thing?
Dan
I bought a poplar board at Menard's two years ago because of all the colors including purple. Haven't seen any since but I also haven't been looking.
Scrolling Steve
Don't think i have ever bought a piece of Poplar with purple in our area.....would like to see that.
jbrowning
I sure wish I had taken a picture of the two boards I bought last year with the purple in it. I was actually able to make like 4 or 6 nativities Scott posted up with the purple being the star and the tail of the star. Those pieces went really quick when I put them out at the sales this past November and December.
jbrowning
I also just saw that it is called Rainbow Poplar.
Sycamore67
I find some green and purple poplar at Menards. I have also gotten some great blue pine. Every time I am there I check the poplar and pine. tomsteve
Lucky2
Jim, I believe it's just a characteristic of certain poplar trees, it's not something that can be counted on occurring in each tree. That's what makes it so hard to find or scarce, it's not a product that can be regularly counted on getting in quantity. kywoodmaster
Jim The purple usually comes from Tulip Poplar. The closer you get to the KY. WV. area the more you will see. How much do you need and what sizes?
lawson56
Well, it's been awhile since I bought Poplar, but the last few boards I bought did have purple in it.I was making a Toy Chest for a client.

Same here Steve. Out of the 100 or so boards of poplar I've bought in our area, never seen purple. I see some interesting black striping now and again and I grab them for doing penguins. :-)

daveww1
when I buy poplar I buy 100 bd. ft. at a time, a few boards may have purple streaks in them
jbrowning
I want to say I saw the purple streaks this one time. AND it was at Lowes (of all places) not a woodworking store like WoodCraft.

Len yup, its like curly/flame/quilted maple. theres millions of bd ft of maple cut every year, but a very small percentage is curly/flame/quilted. Frank Pellow
I'm sure that I would have problems finding polar with purple if I looked for it, but I never looked for it.
