Scrolling Categories - Need Help

Hi everybody.  I'm working on putting together a listing of pattern vendors.  I'm building it in a similar way as I did the Clubs & Organizations section.  I'd like to tag pattern makers by the type of work they do.  So I'm trying to put together a broad list of types of scrolling.  I can use your help.  What other categories of scrolling am I missing or should add to the list?

Here's what I have so far:

  • Fretwork
  • Portraits
  • Intarsia/Segmentation
  • Inlay/Marquetry
  • Lath Art
  • Compound Cutting
  • Puzzles
  • Toys
  • Home Items
  • Signs

Thanks for your help!

I'm thinking of the projects which the use of the scroll saw is secondary.  Yes, a scroll saw is used for some aspect of the item, but that aspect is secondary.  One word that springs to mind for this is "Embellishment".

These shelves that I made last year for a great nephew might qualify as one such project:

I'm trying to figure out how this is going to work and wonder if we've mis-understand you... for instance the categories that have already been suggested could fit into many categories.. for instance Clocks, ornaments, and the other categories could all fall under Fretwork, compound cut, lathart etc etc.. which could get very complicated.. so I'm trying to understand what you are trying to accomplish.. before I can suggest anything..that isn't already there..

The trick is to get it broad enough to cover areas where people will be searching for types of patterns, but not so broad that the bucket becomes generic.  Clocks is a good example.  There are some folks who really like clock patterns.  So they would be looking for vendors that do clocks patterns.  Technically, it would fall under fretwork, but they'd have to sift through a lot of sites before they come across clock patterns.

So for example, Wilckens Woodworking specializes in clock patterns.  So their entry would include the categories:  fretwork, clocks.  Charles Dearing specializes in portraits.  So he would be categorized as: fretwork, portraits.  Steve Good does all kinds of things, so his categories might be:  word art, baskets, puzzles, toys, home items, decor.

I don't want a huge list of scrolling types, but enough to give others enough information to that pattern designer's offerings.  It'll be a checkbox style entry where you check all that apply.

Is this going to work into a searchable list of end products? i.e. if I wanted to check out available fretwork patterns of hummingbirds across all pattern makers - would that be doable?

Thanks,

Jay

It won't be that elaborate.  Just a category listing of pattern vendors with reviews.  If you're into compound cutting, you can find them and see that Diana Thomas and Sue Mey make compound cutting patterns.
