Now this question goes back a few years but being I see alot of people here do animal puzzles, who was the inventor of these. I remember they were called something like Garanimals or woodanimals or something like that and the first name Steve sticks in my head. Anyone have an idea?? One of the scrollsaw magazines featured him back then too. Lots of people put out those patterns now but just thinking out loud.

Jim Sweet started making them in 1989.. Not sure that he was the first.. seems to be several designers doing the same thing..

Edit to add.. He made the ones called Woodimals.. Those are the ones that Fox Chapel now sells.. They have disc with many particular categories (ie Dogs, Cats, Wildlife etc.. ) or a large disc with all those on one disc ( 445 ish patterns ).. I used a holiday coupon back in Dec.. and ordered the full disc for $80 shipped.. Think regular price was $145 Pretty impressive collection for not a lot of money..

There was also someone doing them called " Puzzimals"  I don't have any info on who this was / is..

Puzzimals is a name used on Etsy for the person that sells the ones made by Harvey.  That may not be the same one you're thinking of, but that's who I know by that name.

And Harvey has only been drawing them for the past 20 years.

The copy I have is Woodimals by Jim Sweet. It was / is published though ScrollSaw Woodworking and Crafts. May still be available on their site, did not look .

If you google woodimals there is a domain name woodimals.com.. but by clicking the web site actually takes you to Fox chapel web site.. That is because Jim sold out several years ago.. Not sure Jim is even around anymore.. this venture of his started after he retired.. and this was back in 1989.. There were actually many more patterns.. apparently he didn't sell the copyrights too "All" of his patterns to Fox Chapel..

Dale from Dale's Puzzles did the Puzzimals.  Mostly dog breeds.  I sell them on his behalf at  www.scrollsawgoodies.com.

Yes, I knew there was a site years ago that had these.. and Dales Puzzles is it.. I couldn't remember the name.. I bought several of his patterns several years ago.. but lost them in a hard dive crash.. I had most of the collection...and only got to make the Boxer and Great Dane ones before my drive crashed..

If you bought them directly from me (scrollsawgoodies.com), I might have record of your purchases.  If so, I could help restore those for you.  If you bought them from Dale when he had his shop, that might be a bit more difficult since I don't have visibility in his past sales.  You'd have to contact him directly.  I haven't heard from him in quite awhile, though.

I believe than it was Jim Sweet that started them. Not sure. But all that do them now are followers. Every time I see one weather by the people here or not I flash back to when they came out and thought the idea was pretty cool. I guess they did not copyright the idea to protect it either.

JT, I have one of the pattern books that tells the story of how he got the idea and how everything took place.. I'd copy and post it but I'm sure the story is part of the copyright in the book.. Story is about a page and a half from the book.. good read.. on the history of them.. I'm pretty sure he was the original designer for these style puzzles..
