Magnifiers

I have purchased head magnifiers over the last 45 years. I have many, mostly Optivisors but many others of similar type. None have ever been comfortable, always moving and have to be adjusted on my head. Perusing ebay I found these. They are ultra light weight and come with four interchangeable lens of varying diopters. At 2.99 with free shipping they are a bargain.

I need another mag light and have been putting it off as to researching etc.. since it's not something I desperately need.. since I can take one off one saw to move to another.. as i have 3 of them.. but have 4 saws.. and like to just sit at a saw and go to work.. without having to move stuff around..

Anyway, I have never thought about a head mounted deal like that.. This would be much easier to move from one saw to the next... and I would always know where to mount it for the least amount of vibration. :)

Seems like I am always looking to be the negative guy. Well here I go again. Doing scrolling requires to be relaxed, not hunched over the saw. You have to find that perfect distance when wearing those. I use some when working on watches or other fine detail work. It is not for hours and hours though. A good magnifier attached to a saw can be swung into play or out of play very easily. Easy to set distance because it stays when set the first time. Just my opinion. One of mine broke a few weeks ago so I will be picking one up when the woodworking show comes to town in Feb. May pick up 2 and have a spare. Now they make them LED.

The magnifier I have is not illuminated. It is only a magnifier. I scroll with reading glasses but when I need to see detail the magnifier is handy. Because of how the magnifiers fit while wearing them I see through my reading glasses for scrolling and look over the magnifiers for distance all without having to change the position of the magnifier.

That is a good point.. I use the doppler or whatever you call them.. and just swing it out of my way when i don't need them.. I been thinking about ordering the one from Bushton as it looks like a pretty nice one and LED to boot.. My other ones came from Menards and have the round tube light in them..

I use to use those magnifiers just for a light source, now I can not scroll without the magnifier. Not sure what happened. Have the first one I ever used which was an incandescent bulb one.  I just got rid of one that had the starter on the outside if anyone remembers those lights. FS2 Starter

My 226 Hawk came with a light with the starter ballast on the outside.. My first light is still going strong.. bought it from Menards back in 2007.. so I bought another when I needed one for another saw... thinking my next will be the LED style.. just hope they are worth the extra cost..

I am thinking of getting something like this.

My magnifying lamp still works but the clamp that secures it to a desk or whatever broke. I have had that type, floor type and one that attaches to the saw.

Something on the lines of what Les brought up As I said I have something like this and it works for working on watches and small detail stuff but to use it for scrolling it would want to make me bend over more and get hunched because they are not powerful enough to be too far away from your work. When you scroll you want to sit straight and be relaxed or at least I do. Using a magnifier lamp works for me because you set it and forget it. Even if you move your head. Some people use them in jewelry making and even pen making if they are tweaking a fountain pen. It may work for you. never know.

Ya I have had several magnifier lamps, I don't want to use magnification all the time, its just for specific details or small cuts and I am also looking at getting into coin cutting. I think I will speak to my friend who is a dentist and see what he says about these type of things for scrolling. I don't want to spend crazy money but I could spend a few hundred for quality ones that I could just sit back with when doing intricate stuff.

J.T. I'm not sure of how much you have to pay for them at the show but I bought one at Harbor Freight for under $40 with their coupon and it works great. Not L.E.D. though. I am researching a bulb to replace the flourescent when it dies.

Yeah me too.. I just blew up a bulb when my hawk saw broke a blade.. apparently had the light too close and the blade broke and flew up and busted my bulb..

So far.. I found this..

I looked around about a year or so ago for LED replacements for the circular tube lights and didn't find much..

This is the light I have from Menards.. I bought my first one back in 2007 and then got another around 2011 ish.. Been trouble fee ever since until I broke the bulb tonight, LOL.. Think I'm going to buy the one in the second link in the post reply above.. and if it goes well... I'll buy another of these mag lights..

Got a friend that bought LED shop lights for his garage.. I bought the florescent style and put in replacement LED bulbs.. mine are two years old now.. his one year almost.. his quit working.. and had to toss out the whole unit as no replaceable bulbs.. I like to but lights and hang them once then replace bulbs.. not a big fan of replacing /hanging new light fixtures all the time... Which is why I'm thinking about going this route rather than a whole new LED magnifier..

That said.. with these type lights.. the springs and hardware do wear out so replacing the whole unit might not be too bad as long as the LED light hold up several years..
