Common abbreviations?

I've trying to look up many of the abbreviations scrollers use and it's not easy LOL

I've been able to find some, but many are alluding me.

Does anyone have a link to common abbrevs?

  • BB - Baltic Brich? Balsa?
  • TPI - Teeth per inch
  • SWWC - Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts?

any others you can think of I need to be aware of?

BB - Baltic birch ply, a common favorite for making portraits and other projects. It has more layers than other types of ply so it is a bit stronger.

The best thing to do is ask. We don't use the abbreviation to exclude anyone so don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks @MrsN

However, I was ridiculed in another forum for asking too many questions - I was told to "research" and "read" and find my own answer so I tend to be skittish on asking

That's unfortunate.  However, around here folks love answering questions, so have no fear.

Just keep asking - pay no attention to the people who say to just Google it.

Ditto! - would be nice if we had a "list" for the acronyms somewhere though wouldn't it.  Maybe we can start to compile one with this thread.  Keep asking questions - that's how we all learn from each other.  Usually, instead of telling someone to "research" it - we might give you a link to a thread, a site, or information that gives the answers being sought.

I was told many years ago that the only dumb question was the one that wasn't asked. Took me a while to understand. If you don't ask you may not understand. One thing I really love about the village is how the members help each other and support their efforts. Please feel free to ask any questions we were all there once and all got help in learning and understanding.

I have it set up where certain acronyms will have a dotted line under them.  If you hover your mouse over it, it will expand the acronym so you know what folks are talking about.  Right now, this is what I have:

  • BB
  • BLO
  • SSG
  • SSV
  • SWWC
  • TPI
  • FD

If there are other acronyms you want me to add, just list them here.

@Travis

Thank you - that is very helpful!

I'll post a few tomorrow that I just learned while reading a new book

You ask as many questions as you like, we don't care even if you ask the same one three times before you can understand it.  You you understand means we did it right for you.

PS it took me 15 years before I found out that FD was Flying Dutchman.

I dropped out of college physics class because I wasn't getting how to do logarithms on my slide rule. After the teacher had gone over it twice I asked him to do it one more time because I just wasn't understanding it. He told me that if I couldn't do it after twice, I'd never get it. That was my last day in college. I went out and found another way to make a living.

I had a high school algebra teacher like that.  She showed it once, if you didn't get it the first time - you were the problem - not her method of teaching.

I belong to another group in which that happened. I did not happen to me. However, there was an individual that told many new posters to look things up themselves, a rather caustic individual. He has not been a poster for quite a while. He may have been removed from the site. I have never found that here. This is the friendliest group I have found. Very, very laid back. Keep on asking.

Me too Rocky. I like it here so much that I don't get a lot done.

Oh my - I think it must be a generational thing - I can't tell you how many teachers I've had that were terrible teachers - in fact most of them should never have been given a license to teach.

I know this because during  the early 80's  I developed computer curriculum for and used to teach at a technical school in California.

As I looked back on the self serving, favorite playing so called instructors that called themselves :teachers during grade and high school,  I have to laugh.

It was because of them not due to them I became what I became in my life.

These so called teacher only taught to students who excelled, the rest of the class was left behind to fend for ourselves and discarded as lower class students. Yeah, right!

I can honestly say, there are only a few real "teachers" I had before I dropped out of high school during my Junior year and went to a GED training academy!

One of them was a typing teacher - she knew I was a young aspiring musician and taught me to type by showing me how to relate it to playing the piano! By the end of class I was the fastest typist in class and still today I can easily type 60-70 wpm (words per minute) - maybe not without errors, but that is what error checking is for LOL

An english teacher who knew I hated to read (at the time, now I love it) and gave me very short books on interesting topics to me  to read! No Shakespeare, no Hemingway until I was ready.

In school I could barely get through algebra let alone geometry! The teacher used to hit me behind the head when I failed to divide properly calling me "stupid"

With my GED teacher, I was able to get through college level II Calculus! Yeah, he was terrific

In fact I modeled my own teaching style after the few good teachers I actually had:

  • Teach students in terms the pupil can understand, not in the terms you WANT them to understand.
  • Teach students using examples THEY can relate to, not what you WANT them to relate to.
  • If they don't get it at first, it is the teachers responsibility, not theirs to help them understand and learn - no matter how long it takes
  • It is not the fault of a student who wants to learn and can not, it is the fault of the teacher who does not prepare lessons appropriately and takes the "easy" path to Tenure.
  • Do not teach to the best in the class, teach to the middle and have the better students assist others when possible with proper tutoring techniques

It's a shame what has happened to our educational system

Oh yea, this is a very sore subject for me...

Wen I first started teaching 1st year electrical students at our state college, I was presenting the material as if the students already had some experience. I will never forget what my Coordinator told me. "You need to remember that the students don't know anything about the subject. You have done this kind of work so long that you have forgotten that you didn't know it at one time." Something we all need to remember when someone new starts asking questions. At one time we were all new to scrolling.
