Iguanadon
Hi All, Harvey mentioned to me that he had been asked to create patterns for a handful of family crests by a friend of his and he sent me a couple of samples of them. I'm pretty clueless about such things, but apparently there are thousands of crests out there for family names and Harvey is wondering if there's a broader market for them so I said I'd mention it out here and hear what anyone has to say. Have any of you been asked about crests or done any before? See attached examples for Fraser and Sutherland Fraser Crest.pdf Sutherland Crest.pdf
WayneMahler
Nice work on these. I haven't had any requests but I'm sure there would be a small market for it. I don't think people are into family heritage and doing family trees like back in the day but for those that do, this could be a great addition for them. rjweb
Iggy, what are you saying, if we give him a last name he will design the crest, how would we know that it is the correct crest, RJ

If you google "Fraser crest" the image comes up that Harvey turned into a pattern as just one example. He's not designing or creating crests, he's turning existing ones into patterns. I hope that helps clarify. I'm learning about crests as well.
crupiea
Keep in mind that these things will bring the family crest snobs out. Everyone has an opinion about them it seems.
Rockytime
As a young kid I asked if there were any famous relatives. He said, "I think there was a horse thief." Never asked him again.
spirithorse
I designed a family crest for my fore-man/supervisor at work and one for my mother's side of the family but, they are in Intarsia style and I have not cut either of them yet. Our family is very interested in the family genealogy. God Bless! Spirithorse
bandaideman
A few years ago my Daughter had friends who were going to Ireland as missioners and they had shared with her a photo of there crest in Ireland where their ancestors are from and she thought it would be nice if I could make it in wood. So I looked it over and thought maybe but I don't do patterns so I asked at the Scrollers Cafe and was able to get a pattern. It was quite a cut. It had the Lion on it Ireland top and there name bottom with folage around the out side. and Some kind of weapons I think. Anyway that is the only one I have done and never had any other requests in the 20 years I have scrolled. I do have a Crest for my family which I will look at making a pattern for my dad and hope to do it soon. He will be 96 in March and is doing OK but you never know. jerry1939
I Googled 1 for my Brother & Wife and another for my Widowed Sister. Much more complex than these. Traced them with the Bezier tool. I am not sawing now in our unheated Iowa garage & have another unfinished project to do first. I have no interest in doing Intarsia, but the plan is to try "fake intarsia". Will cut everything from 1/8 & 1/4" BB and spray paint the pieces. You don't want to know how many "bright ideas" I have failed at in my life. , but will give it a shot this spring/summer.

scrollerpete
I think they will be very popular in an Irish based community. I got a couple before on request from Irish background people
wombatie
I have always known that I have Irish Heritage (my mum always said that I have an Irish temper ) but we always thought that Terry's was Welsh, I just googled it and it came up Scottish, please don't tell Rob Roy. Lucky2
Iggy, there's so many different family crests, that I don't think a person could figure out which ones to cut out. For something like this, I think you would almost need to take orders from customers. Maybe not, but that's the only way I would try selling them. If not done that way, you could end up stuck with unpopular ones. I would cut out my family crest for display, and then have a sign letting people know I could cut out their's for so much money.
