Adhesive & Shelf Liner

Recommended Posts

I just stopped at my local Ace Hdw. and looked for 3M 44 adhesive. There was none but lots of 77 which I have and is messy. Good lord some of the stuff is pricey. I can afford it but won't spend unnecessary funds. I did buy a can of Elmer's all purpose adhesive for $5.99. Has anyone used the stuff? I can go to HD but Ace is right around the corner from me. I also purchased 12" X 10' shelf paper. Did not look at the price but will try it. It is re positional so I hope it adheres ok.

When you say that the 3M 77 is messy, what did you mean? And how is the 44 not messy. I'm just asking because I bought the 77 when everybody was suggesting it. There are a lot of others on the market that are much cheaper. I also bought the shelf liner that Iggy suggested and it seems to work great.

The 3M 77 is ridiculously super sticky, I personally don't like it at all. Any overspray or areas that you don't use for gluing a pattern is just so sticky it feels messy.   I use 3M 45 and it's fine for paper patterns and not nearly as crazy.  LOL

Oops! I misspoke. The adhesive I mentioned as 44 was wrong, I should have had said 45. There was 45 on the shelf and I thought it was the wrong stuff. Holy smokes the 3M adhesives range from 14.95 to 23.95 for 77 and 45. If the Elmer's does not work I'll live with the 45. It's not the money but it is the money. Hope that makes sense.

I'll try it once. If does not work for me out it goes. I use Ace Hdw. because it is very convenient and I know the people there. Good service too. Walking around a big box store looking for something and not finding a clerk wastes a lot of time. Also lots of walking does not work for me. The shelf liner I bought does not work. The adhesive on it won't stick to anything. Guess I'll go with Iggy's source if I can find it again.

Thanks Iggy. 3M 45 is $23.99 at Ace. I just ordered two from Amazon for $5.77 each and free Prime shipping. I order a lot from Amazon. This morning I came home from breakfast and drove right by Ace. Needing an Adhesive I turned in and made a purchase. Since the shelf liner did not work I used my painters tape. Back to Amazon for shelf liner.

I bought a large can of 77 at H/D about a year ago and paid $10. I thought that was expensive.

Thanks for the link Iggy!

I believe I will order some of the "45".

I've been using Elmer's and haven't been happy with it. Paper patterns and Elmers won't stick to that shelf paper.

Amazon used to carry the 12" wide shelf liner, but stopped, so I order it from Walmart, free shipping with $35 order

I have tried using both Elmers and Locktite, did not like either one. I had problems with the pattern lifting at the wrong time when cutting in close to other cuts. I have been using 3M 77 for a long time and the price at Lowe's or Walmart is around $10. However the last can I bought has changed both in the diminutions of the can, taller and slimmer, and I thank the formula has changed because the spray comes out really wet and soaks the paper. Even after shaking the can before use it is still the same wetness. I also noticed the word super has been added and don't remember seeing that before!  I have let the glue dry to the tackiness of masking tape as I have always done and the pattern will not stay stuck to the tape or shelf liner. Not sure what is going on but have to get it sorted out soon!

Hi Iggy.I stopped in Walmart this morning. They have a hundred kinds of shelf liners but no Duck brand. There is a new Walmart super store nearby so I will try them. I may not live long enough to use one roll let alone $35 worth. I can order it from Walmart on line and do a store pick-up but it still has a shipping fee of over $5. It is available locally. I just have to  check around. Again thanks for the info.

Rocky, I bought mine at Walmart too and it doesn't say Duck on it. Still works great though and it was only $5.65 a roll. 12" x 36 feet if I recall.

I have used 3m 45 on lots of things - sticky? You betcha - it's supposed to be LOL - over spray? You betcha - all over the place.

However, I use one of those thin tubes like the ones that come on a WD40 can and can focus the spray of the 3m 45 - works much better this way and no where near as messy

In the past 2 days since I've set up the Wen 3920, I also got ELMERS Repositionable Mounting Spray Adhesive, 10 Oz, Clear (E454)  as well - it is much less messy than the 3m 45.

I set up a gluing station just for the scr oll patterns, and this really helps to focus the gluing and pattern set up.

When I glue patterns now, I also lay down a sheet of brown paper (in the background) on the glue station.

Now there is very little mess - works for me anyway

I use Elmer’s spray and don’t have a problem with it.  I put pattern in a spray box to control overspray.  Also have been using shelf liner for awhile.  Comes off easy with little or no residue.  Sometimes use heat gun on delicate pieces to ease removal.  I get the liner from the Dollar store for a buck a roll.  Way cheaper than painters tape and comes off as easy, IMHO.

Ok, I'm thick - but how do you use shelf liner?

I'm using spray glue, and trying to figure out how you get your patterns onto a shelf liner.

Thanks in advance

put the shelf liner on the wood sticky side down.  Spray glue on the back of your pattern and put the pattern on top of the shelf liner.  The shelf liner replace the blue painters tape we use to use.  Shelf finer works as good or better for some than the blue tape and it is cheaper.  I like using it.
