Largest Scroll Saw Project You Have Taken On?

Just curious on some of the largest projects some of you have attempted? By large I mean the most pieces or elements that come together to completed one large item and/or project.

I'm a huge baseball fan, collected cards and memorabilia for about 35 years now (drives my Wife nuts). Last week during the 2018 HOF announcement, several of us at the fire station were debating about what makes a HOF ball player and the total number of HOF inductees was brought up. As of the 2018 Class of Baseball HOF there are 323 inductees.......255 are ball players, the rest are either Managers, Umpires or Pioneers / Executives. Well, guess what? I have decided to scroll saw a portrait of each HOF'er and have them as a collage on the wall in my man cave / baseball room. Any tips or suggestions on achieving something this size?

No Skip, I don't have any ideas or suggestions, on how to go about doing what you want to do. But I do want to wish you the best of luck with it, it is quite the daunting task to take on.

I think you will need a bigger wall!  I would make them rather small and only enough detail to be recognizable.  Compared to your task, I have not done anything very "big".

Bigger Wall......right, I know......the Wife just looked at me & walked away shaking her head. I'm playing around with "Gimp" (Thanks to the videos on here by Steve Goode) to try and get the smallest size possible & still have a recognizable pattern.

You really are trying to drive the wife crazy or confirm to her that you are nuts sounds like.   Good for you for taking on such an arduous task.  How many are inducted each year?  could you do a "composite" grouping on one larger board for each year?  Might be harder to do, but might take a little less room overall was my thought.  Good luck and make sure you let us see.

I would skip the portraits and just do names and make some sort of frame that has a baseball theme with Hall of fame somewhere in it. If possible and this would be tough to have one of their baseball cards next to the name. I made some wall plaques for my nephews a long time ago when they were in little league. I do not have photos on my computer but if I can find the hard copy photos maybe I can scan them. But I made it with a scrolled baseball player and put a place for a real baseball. I then had a what looked like the scoreboard with their names scrolled in it. Also there was a place to put their baseball cards. ( they all got their own baseball cards back then.) So many more details you can add to make it look cool. Cut baseballs in half and place around the plaque. Incorporate a home plate in there and maybe make into the shape of a baseball diamond as you place the names. It will take up some wall space but alot less than portraits that people will probably not recognize anyway. Good luck.

You could just scroll the name/year and make it easier, take less space....

Ha, I see John and I were thinking along the same lines, he hit enter before I did.  John's is a little more elaborate than mine.

There is no rules and/or regulations on the number(s) voted into the MLB HOF per year, only that the player has been removed from the play field for a minimum of 10 years.

There has been some years that no eligible players received enough votes to be inducted. Some years there have been up to (six +) players inducted........ie (years 41-43, 50, 60, 90 no players inducted...........2006 had ten players inducted.

I really do like your idea of a larger board for each year inductees......I think that will give more room for the names and have one larger heading with the HOF year........Do you mind if I use your idea / suggestion?

The largest I took on was N,R,A  and Paitriotic Plaques for my Sis, N,R,A Fundraiser meeting last year she wanted me to make 12 plaques with the N,R,A logo (had their O,K,) and several Paitriotic Plaques.to be auctioned off.Got them done in time.she raised over $500 from my plaques.

i think thats 10 years of MLB experience and has to be retired 5 years?

THAT is one huge project and im personally excited for you. this could be an awesome experience for you. im thinking it would be wise to take time and figure out how you want it all to display. invision it all on the wall(s).

personally i think it would be cool to scroll portraits of each player while in uniform and playing. im thinking of somehow maybe lay out the wall( and if you dont have a large/long enough wall then wrap it around a corner. have the very corner split home plate and second base) like a baseball diamond- maybe like a view from up high behind home plate. then have the portrait of each player at their position.

or maybe scroll out their name,  number, years played into a plaque and have a picture of each player with it at the position.

cept theres some that dont have numbers,like ty cobb. no numbers on uniforms back in the day.

 

im even thinkin how cool it would be to have something for the broadcasters in the HOF. i have some good memories of listening to tigers baseball with ernie harwell calling the game on the radio. so many of those broadcasters have/can make the game live in a persons living room,shop,yard, or even car.

tomsteve.......you are correct, my apologies.........10 years experience & 5 years retired.

I do like your idea for a baseball diamond layout........I may have to extend a few walls, sure the wife will OK with that, lol. 

I like going to the game & listen to the broadcasters on my phone.

bowers, ill be in the shop with the game on the tv and listen to the radio broadcast. i get a little time delay between the 2 so if/when a great play or hit happens, i hear it on the radio before it happens on the tv and that gives me a chance to stop what im doing and pay attention to the game for a bit.

Thanks, I did that probably in my first year and was too "new" to realize that it was advanced as it was.  Had started it then put it away for awhile.
