kmmcrafts
Hey, I know I haven't been around much lately due to a bookkeeping snafu ( post abut this later in the week ) and I am now just dropping in post a picture of my latest "ornamental firewood" LOL Had a request for a Aston Martin desk clock.. so I put together a pattern.. showed the customer the design and she loved it but told me to make sure I change the spelling as I had it "Aston Marton" Guess what? I changed it alright.. see photo.. I didn't even catch this until I was listing a add on the website..and my spell checker went off on a typo i did and not even on the car name.. on another word but then I looked and somehow caught it.. I had already sent out the invoice to the customer and was getting ready to mail this out today.. glad I decided to make a Made To Order listing on etsy where I caught the mis-spelling.. LOL.. Anyway enjoy the good laugh while I get back to work.. many orders to fill this week and the bookkeeping snafu.. I probably won't be around much this week yet.. just had to drop in to say I'm still around.. just very busy.. meflick, Lucky2, tomsteve and 6 others 5

Oh Dear I would not burn that I would cut a straight line just above the wording and have it as a standard car clock desk plate it will sell still, I think it is to good to burn, I got it I got it keep it as reminder not to do it again kmmcrafts and new2woodwrk

tgiro
Like when I cut a keychain for my wife and mispelled her name (we'd only been married for 25 years at the time. Luckily, my daughter caught it before I gave it to her. Stupid - I didn't toss the bad one and the wife found it in a shop drawer a couple of years later. Then she though it was funny. She still has it and pulls it out to tease me every now & then. wombatie, bobscroll, WayneMahler and 3 others 3
WayneMahler
I'm sure your in good company. I actually have a box in my shop marked designer firewood. Glad you caught it before it got shipped. kmmcrafts
JTTHECLOCKMAN
Is that cherry wood. I love working with cherry wood. I would (not sure if you glue your bases on, I always screw them on so that fixes can be made easier) scroll the name out and infill with some maple with the proper name. Make it thinner so that there is a reveal around it. There is always a fix and would not take much effort unless the base is glued to the clock. Made a name plate for a lady once. Got the order through one of my consignment stores. They spelled the ladies name wrong. She comes to pick it up and refused it so lost revenue there and she did not reorder. That is one problem working with consignment stores no contact between customer and you.
MrsN
We all have made designer firewood at one time or another. I hope your customer is not too upset about the delay. I hope you can salvage some part of the clock, It is a wonderful cutting apart from the spelling. kmmcrafts
RangerJay
Funny how the simplest of things - overlooked - can get us into trouble. I'd agree that it is very fixable without a lot of extra effort - and can still come out looking great! Jay kmmcrafts
keithv
That's a beautiful piece. You just have to find someone named Auston Martin to buy it. kmmcrafts

Yeah that is Cherry.. and I did glue the base..I used to always use screws for the base mount.. but switched to glue a year or so ago.. I plan to modify it in some way to save it.. Quite a simple cut as there's not a whole lot of inside cuts.. so I figured it'd just be faster and more productive to make another one which I did do today.. already done and will ship it out tomorrow.. How this all happen was in my files on the computer, the customer corrected me on it in the pattern I showed her. I made a new pattern but never deleted the old one.. printed the wrong pattern.. kmmcrafts
Here is a picture of the replacement.. I do at least one stupid mistake like this every year.. then I get to relaxed and don't check / double check. Last year was gluing a backer and mistakenly glued to the front side LOL WayneMahler, wombatie, GrampaJim and 4 others
Chiloquinruss
In this 'semi' computer literate society, just cut a wiggly line under Auston and tell them the wood's spell checker caught it! Russ kmmcrafts and wombatie

I do not think I would have caught the mistake because not everyday I spell that car's name. Chevy truck I got

Chevy truck I got JT, I use a homemade mix of beeswax and mineral oil.. mixed to the consistency of a paste wax.. then apply with an acid brush.. gob it on in the frets where the brush doesn't fit well then heat it with a hair dryer / heat gun.. the force of the dryer on high will blow the melted mix into the cutouts until it runs out the back side.. wipe off excess with paper towels and it's done..Not as easy as just dipping in Danish oil but never had a issue with it bleeding out etc like I've had with those other finishes..and I don't have to deal with waiting periods for drying nor any strong smells to get my customer high when they open the box.. I had got complaints of that in the past..even after waiting 7-10 days.. Doing online selling.. as "made-to-order" type selling.. people don't want to wait 2 weeks for the item to get made.. then another 2 weeks for the item to dry.. then the shipping times etc etc.. so I did a lot of researching.. this mix I make seems to be the best solution.. Many times I make an item and mail it out the very same day..
stoney
Designer Firewood? Oh yeah I have made some dandies! One of the worst was a misspelling of the word kingdom in a fretwork Lord's Prayer plaque. As most of you know that word appears in the last sentence. I spelled it kingdon and needless to say did not catch it until the project was completely finished. That one was a real bummer as a lot of time goes into a project like that. Anyhow your latest addition clock looks great Kevin. Thanks for showing us. Edited January 30, 2018 by stoney
scrollerpete
I know the feeling, I have made some very nice stuff for the wood stove before.
Lucky2
It's sad Kevin, but I think we've all been there, done that. It's most definitely a learning experience, one you don't ever want to forget. The new one looks great, I'm sure your customer will be pleased with the end results. heppnerguy
I have to be a part of the mass that is fessing up to making the same type of error. I made some Christmas order where the person wanted 7 different names put into a plaque of the state they lived in and I put the wrong names with the wrong states... I will just hang them on my shop wall as a sample of my work as no one but me will have any idea that it is a mistake.
