new2woodwrk Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 Think most call it waste, but I've read a few articles calling it Negative Space - when you cut out your interior and the space (waste) around it is left whole. Does anyone use their negative space for anything? I was thinking they would make a decent stencil. Thoughts? lawson56 1 Quote
fredfret Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 I keep larger pieces in the project for stability until completed. If the pieces are large enough for a new project I keep otherwise ornate firewood. Anything smaller than 2x2 is gone. Fredfret new2woodwrk and SCROLLSAW703 2 Quote
jerry1939 Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 As far as a stencil, I often find myself making extra cuts, ruining the stencil effect. Removing the outside of a "V" would be an example. I make the first cut of the V, back out & approach the other side straight. This makes a sharper point. If the cut out is large enough to be useful for something else, go for it. jerry new2woodwrk 1 Quote
trackman Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 If I am cutting out a piece for an inlay I will keep the piece not used an use somewhere else. new2woodwrk 1 Quote
Bill WIlson Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 Frankly, I accumulate plenty of scrap that I save, so most of the negative space pieces end up in the scrap bin. It's kind of like the leftover pieces when you are compound cutting. The look like they should be usable for something, but if I saved all that stuff, I wouldn't be able to find my saw. new2woodwrk 1 Quote
Rob Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 Usually it end up in the scrap bin but recently I cut this Tui bird on a flax flower: I took the "waste" modified it slightly to remove a fragile piece and the place where my entry hole was and surface mounted it on another board. Ended up selling both which was a great result! Rob WayneMahler, new2woodwrk, JimErn and 3 others 6 Quote
dgman Posted February 9, 2018 Report Posted February 9, 2018 I call it waste, and that's how I treat it. If you save it, soon you will accumulate so much waste, you'll wonder why you are saving it! new2woodwrk and NC Scroller 2 Quote
