Overfifty
Been "scrolling" for seven years (ish). I cover my wood with painter's tape, spray the tape and backside of the pattern with spray adhesive, apply to the tape, and cover with good quality packing tape. _However_ inevitably when cutting fretwork or making intricate, tiny cuts the packing tape and pattern separate and it turns into guess work as to where to cut. Does this happen to everyone and you just accept it or am I missing something? Thank you. OCtoolguy

3Dface
i used to use painters tape. heard about walmart shelf paper. spray glue pattern with no packing tape. the only times i have separation problems is 1, if i let it sit to long before i cut it or 2 , if the pattern is larger than 1 sheet of paper. wombatie
Ditch the packing tape. Marg OCtoolguy
WayneMahler
I use blue painters tape. Spray the pattern and then cut. I only use packing tape on deeper cuttings. The spray adhesive I use is 3M super 77 and never had a problem. OCtoolguy
JTTHECLOCKMAN
as with everyone else I use blue painters tape but the tape needs to be fresh and not years old. I then spray pattern and cut making sure the glue is dry before drilling. If I get to a delicate situation I will use a pencil with an eraser to guide the piece so that I can get close to the blade without my fingers getting in the way. This is the spray adhesive I have been using for years.http://www.staples.com/Krylon-Super-Quick-Grip-Spray-Adhesive-11-oz/product_301433?cid=PS:BingPLAs:301433&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=301433&KPID=301433&cvosrc=PLA.bing-SALES.Office Suppli WayneMahler and OCtoolguy 1
KurtP
What type of glue are you using? The only time that happened to me was when I changed the glue I was using. I bought can of the cheaper Elmers glue and it would happen all the time. I went back to the 3M77 and never had the issue again. There was another discussion about this just a little while ago. loftyhermes
Well I must the lucky one because in all the years I've been scrolling I've never had a problem attaching the pattern to the wood and it staying put. All I use is repositionable spray glue applied to the paper and then stuck to the wood, which is always sanded to 240 grit. Sometimes on thick wood I'll cover with clear packing tape, only to prevent the blade burning the cut. happy scrolling Steve OCtoolguy
trackman
If I understand his problem the packing tape is coming loose from the pattern NOT the pattern from the wood (painters tape). When this happens the saw dust builds up between tape and pattern. Now for tip to stop this from happening. Make sure there isn’t any dust on paper before covering with tape. Make sure tape goes down without air bubbles. Press down smooth with hand or roller. Hope this helps. OCtoolguy
NC Scroller
I almost never use painter tape and only use packing tape over patterns when working with hard woods (maple, cherry, ash, walnut,.....). I attach my pattern directly to the wood with 3M Super 77. I remove my pattern with mineral spirits. Since I use Danish Oil or Tung Oil finish I can remove the pattern and apply finish immediately since those products contain mineral spirits. Since I make 100's of items each year to sell this is the process that works for me. The only time I had a lift off issue with packing tape was when I attempted to use a no name brand. new2woodwrk
I feel your pain deeply as I have the exact same problem and can't figure it out I've tried: Painters tape + spray adhesive on pattern Painters tape + spray adhesive on pattern + packing tape on top Shelf liner + spray adhesive on pattern Shelf liner + spray adhesive on pattern + packing tape on top Left all 4 on for hours Left all 4 on for a few minutes Nothing I've done works either when I get to small, close cuts :( OCtoolguy
kmmcrafts
I find that covering the pattern with packing tape after adhering it to the board etc.. you get a fine sawdust gets trapped between the layers and will sometimes cover up my lines.. if this is what you mean? I stopped covering it with packing tape on the top like that long ago..because of this.. I also pre-sand all my work.. and make sure the board it dust free before applying the shelf liner, tape or whatever you use.. blights69
I only have an issue with the pattern peeling off if I have left the piece around for a while before I get around to cut it. I use the same as you blue tape and spray glue the pattern to that. Not sure if your piece was hanging around a while if not then I would try a different spray glue. Overfifty
Thank you everyone. I've decided to not use packing tape any more and see if that makes a difference. It's usually the packing tape that lifts and then the pattern starts to lift. Cheers! OCtoolguy
JTTHECLOCKMAN
I always buy rolls that I cut to use. Cheaper that way and very very easy to do. I get mine here along with sanding pads. http://www.onlineindustrialsupply.com/drsaro.html
