3Dface
just thought i would post something that is helping me and might help others. being in a 10x10 shop with vacs and saws running i have found that for a short while i have trouble hearing. the expanding foam ear plugs drive me crazy.. i found a $10 solution on amazon. they have great sound and cancel out tool sounds even when i don't turn up the music loud. i have it paired with one of my old phones that has almost 400 songs on it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0QSOZZ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 these are the ones i got when they were on sale but i would have paid $20. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0739R3Z24/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 Edited February 26, 2018 by 3Dface new2woodwrk and RangerJay
RangerJay
Funny ..... (not) ...... .... the youthful version of myself never wore hearing protection nor dust masks nor pretty much any other kind of safety protection (with the possible exception of safety glasses - but only under duress) ..... ...... the mature version of myself wears it all ...... ike
I have been working around machenery all my life and the noise doesn't bother me, and I do wear hearing aids now for a couple of years but at 78 that isn't too unreasonable. new2woodwrk
Having been a musician for the better part of 30 years, I've had a constant ringing in my ear for at least 20 of those. Machinery sounds don't seem to bother me, or perhaps I've lost so much of my hearing that I can't tell the difference anyway? 3Dface

Roberta Moreton
I never, ever wore hearing protection. I have turned music up so far that the speakers cracked. Used to go to the races. Been to 5 KISS concerts. Started wearing hearing aids 20 years ago. 15 years ago they no longer helped. Cochlear implants (2, both sides). If someone steps into my shop I stop and hand them hearing protection. They either wear it or leave. stoney
I don't particularly like the in the ear foam type devices either but I do use them for shooting as they are supposed to be more effective. In my shop I have a pair of the over the ear muffs which are more comfortable. I don't wear them all the time only when using my planer, joiner, table saw etc. 3Dface
Bill WIlson
Many years ago we had someone come into work and test employees' hearing. A lot of the older machinists at the time were found to have significant hearing loss. It had happened so gradually, they never really thought much about it. Somebody asked the guy who was doing the testing what the best kind of hearing protection was. His response was; "The one that you will wear." That made an impression on me and since then I've made it a point to wear ear plugs anytime I'm running any kind of machinery. Rockytime
I don't wear ear protection. I'm 79 and my hearing was good but about 15 years ago my hearing began failing rapidly. I do not believe it was from industrial noise but rather hereditary. My mother was very deaf. I wear strong hearing aids and still have difficulty hearing. I have extreme difficulty using the phone and cannot understand calls on my cell. I'm thankful for texting.
Woodmaster1
4months ago I lost 70% of hearing in my left ear all at once. 40 years of teaching industrial arts and my shop work at home didn't help much. I now wear hearing protection to save what I have. 3Dface
3Dface
i have had a low tone hearing loss sense i was a kid. so hi pitch sounds are almost painful. i was wearing my favorite "in case the ear" head phones but being 5'10" with a 6' ceiling had me running into every beam. these have worked well so far. i fell like i need to protect what i have before i have to miss what i had. Paladin
Keep in mind that noise-cancelling headphones are not hearing protection. The normal shop noise is diminished because the headphones emit a cancelling frequency to whatever outside noise is detected. This causes your ears to not 'hear' the noise, but the noise is still there. If you have the headphone turned off, and put them on and listen to the noise level - this is the level of hearing protection you are getting. Rockytime
Although my hearing loss is severe I am going to get noise canceling headphones. Not the kind which are for music but strictly for noise reduction. If I try to listen to music it is just noise. I would only use them when my vacuum cleaner or router run. Lucky2
I wear hearing protection all the time my machines and saws are running,I wear the hearing muff type of protection plus the foam plug type. I do have a pair of muffs that I can listen to music through, I don't wear them. Personally, I don't see any sense in wearing hearing protection that makes a noise. If I wanted to hear a noise, I would listen to my machinery and saws. I like quiet, I like to be able to hear myself think. Plus, I think your defeating the purpose of wearing hearing protection, if the hearing protection makes a noise. Listening to music through you hearing protection, is about the same as listening to a machine whine. Len
